  • Asian‐Pacific Islander Adolescent Sexual Orientation and Defensive Aggression

    Open Access•Thomas K Pinhey, Marilyn Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 36

Objective. This study used the differential‐outcomes hypothesis as a theoretical guide to examine the association of Guam's same‐sex‐ and both‐sex‐oriented Asian‐Pacific Islander adolescents and their participation in defensive aggression. Methods. Using ordinary least squares multiple regression analysis we tested the hypothesis with a probability sample of Guam's Asian‐Pacific high school students. Results. The results of the study demonstrated…

  • Asian/Pacific Islander Adolescent Sexual Orientation and Suicide Risk in Guam

Thomas K Pinhey, Leland Teschler et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2004•Cited by: 10•References: 7

Objectives. We examined the effects of same-sex orientation on suicide risks for Guam’s Asian/Pacific Islander adolescents. Methods. We used a probability sample and logistic regression analysis to identify suicide risk factors. Results. Same-sex orientation was associated with a greater risk of suicide attempt, especially for boys. Adolescents who reported suffering physical abuse in the context of a romantic relationship, engaging in binge drin…

  • Exploring the Purging Behavior of Asian-Pacific Adolescents in Guam

    Thomas K Pinhey, Alton M Okinaka•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 35

This study explored the effects of heavy television viewing on the purging behavior of Asian-Pacific adolescents in Guam. We argue that Westernized television in Guam presents thin, tall, and athletic bodies as the only acceptable images for adolescents. Using logistic regression, we tested the television-purging connection using a probability sample of Asian-Pacific Islander high school students. The results of the analysis support the hypothesi…

  • The Fighting Behavior of Asian–Pacific Males in Guam

    Open Access•Thomas K Pinhey, Michael P Pérez et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2002•Cited by: 2

Objective . We predicted that the social integrative effects resulting from participation in high school extracurricular activities would reduce the physical fighting behavior of Asian–Pacific males in Guam, a population that is known for excessively high levels of physical fighting. Methods . Using ordinary least squares multiple regression analysis we tested the hypothesis with a probability sample of Guam’s Asian–Pacific high school students. …

  • A research note on body mass, physical aggression, and the competitiveness of Asian‐pacific islander adolescents in Guam

    Thomas K Pinhey•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•2002•References: 24

This study uses the evolutionary model to guide an exploration of the effects of body mass on aggressive and competitive behaviors among Asian-Pacific adolescents in Guam. Using a probability sample of Guam's high-school students, the results of logistic regressions suggest that adolescent females with greater body mass are more likely to engage in physical fights (aggression) and to participate in team sports (competitiveness). Ethnic difference…

  • The wages of self‐appraised sin

    Thomas K Pinhey•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 21

This article explores the potential links between religious beliefs, deviant behavior, and negative self‐perceptions in Guam's Asian‐Pacific community. In contrast to earlier reports, the results of multiple regression analyses of Behavioral Risk Factor Survey data (N = 398) suggest that traditional religious beliefs concerning sin may diminish rather than enhance emotional well‐being and that individuals who appraise themselves as sinful may exp…

  • Public Support for Environmental Protection

    George D Lowe, Thomas K Pinhey et al.•ARTICLE•The Pacific Sociological Review•1980•Cited by: 10•References: 13

The amount of support given environmental protection relative to that given ten other problem areas did not decline between 1973 (immediately prior to the “energy crisis”) and 1978. Analysis of the sources of public support for environmental protection revealed that only age had a substantial independent effect (β = −.168) on environmental priority scores

  • Outdoor recreation and environmental concern

    Thomas K Pinhey, Michael D Grimes•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•1979•Cited by: 6•References: 2

The hypothesis proposed by Dunlap and Heffernan (1975) that involvement in outdoor recreational activities leads to greater concern with the natural environment is reassessed in this article. In contrast to earlier research, the findings suggest that recreationally active respondents do not differ greatly from inactives in levels of environmental concern. Tests of a multivariate model that included not only the recreational activity measure but a…
