The Presence of the Word
This provocative exploration of the nature and history of the word in some of its social, psychological, literary, phenomenological, and religious dimensions argues that the word is initially aural and in the last analysis always remains sound; it cannot be reduced to any other category. Father Ong contends that sound is essentially an event manifesting power and personal presence, and his descriptive analysis of the development of the media of v…

A Very Modern Rising
The Easter Rising began in central Dublin at midday on 23 April 1916 when about 150 uniformed men marched from the headquarters of the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union up the quay by the river Liffey, before turning right on to Sackville Street and then charging into the General Post Office, the GPO. Irritated customers at first refused to take the insurgents seriously but they soon took control of the building, tearing down partitions …

Recent hospital-based epidemiological research (e.g.Sullivan & Knutson, 1998) has confirmed the putative link between child maltreatment and the presence of disabilities.Although that research provided suggestive evidence that disabilities could be seen as risk factors for maltreatment, limitations of the design and the archival nature of some data precluded strong inferences regarding the hypothesis that disability occasions risk for abuse.Withi…
Temporary Protection and the Assisted Return of Refugees from the European Union
While there is a growing literature on ‘temporary protection’ in Europe, the question of return has remained relatively less studied. This is however an important focus given that most host governments originally granted temporary protection on the premise of eventual return. Focusing on the case of Bosnians in the European Union, this paper analyses the relationship between temporary protection and return, both in terms of the extent to which re…
Intermittency and relativistic heavy-ion Monte Carlo simulators
We compare the results of two sophisticated Monte Carlo simulators with published data on relativistic heavy-ion collisions. In addition, we include results of a simple Monte Carlo simulator, which is based on the gross features of the data and contains no correlations. We find that the data show a strong signal of intermittency that the three Monte Carlo simulators fail to reproduce. Furthermore, we find that the sophisticated simulators do no b…
