  • Ethics in Qualitative Migration and Refugee Studies in Europe: From “Doing no Harm” to Reciprocity and Equity

Open Access•Charlotte De Kock, Floor Verhaeghe et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 43

Equity, diversity, and inclusion are key concepts in European ethical research standards, especially in qualitative migration and refugee studies (QMRS). The European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (ALLEA, 2012, 2023) provides a framework for the European research community that is grounded in the principles of doing no harm, reliability, honesty, respect, and accountability. The 2023 revision of this Code also emphasizes the importance o…

  • No More Walls in the Seas’: Migration graffscapes and migrants’ messages while en route to and in Europe

Open Access•Océane Uzureau, Marina Rota et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2024•References: 19

This article explores forced migrants’ use of graffiti writing along their precarious and fragmented migration journeys. Previous research has recognized the use of graffiti by activist groups, yet existing empirical evidence of the materiality of life in transit and of forced migrants’ reactions to it remains scarce. Our analysis reveals how graffiti documents migrants’ agentic reactions to the uncertainty and adverse experiences they faced alon…

  • Gender, racialisation, and border regimes: Reflections on Social Positions and Positioning in Research With Young People on the Move

    Moa Nyamwathi Lønning, Océane Uzureau•ARTICLE•New Community•2024•Cited by: 6•References: 33

This article starts from our experiences as two Western women of Black mixed-race background, undertaking fieldwork among unaccompanied young men on the move in Europe. We add to scholarship on ethnographic accounts of encounters. We do this by reflecting on how our positionality affected the research process along often taken-for-granted social categories and markers of sameness and difference, as they related to our fieldwork and the space crea…

  • Loops of Violence(s) Within Europe’s Governance of Migration in Libya, Italy, Greece, and Belgium

    Open Access•Giacomo Orsini, Marina Rota et al.•ARTICLE•Politics and Governance•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 27

Studies have reported alarmingly high rates of traumatic experiences for refugee populations. While nearly all refugees experienced trauma in their country of origin, a vast majority of those seeking protection abroad also face (extreme) violence during their journeys and once in the country of destination. By concentrating on the migratory experiences of about 300 unaccompanied minors that we approached in Libya, Italy, Greece, and Belgium, this…

  • Unaccompanied Adolescent Minors’ Experiences of Exception and Abandonment in the Ventimiglia Border Space

    Open Access•Océane Uzureau, Ine Lietaert et al.•ARTICLE•Politics and Governance•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 22

This article explores unaccompanied adolescent minors’ (UAMs) experiences of deterrent practices at internal EU borders while being on the move. Previous studies have acknowledged the securitisation of external borders through gatekeeping and fencing practices; however, there is a recent and continued renationalisation of internal EU borders by the member states. Like other migrants who are travelling irregularly, UAMs also often face harsh livin…

  • Unaccompanied young refugees in the European Union: A perennial limbo situation studied in a longitudinal perspective

Marina Rota, Océane Uzureau et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Work•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 13

The notion of waiting has always been part of the migration procedure, also for unaccompanied refugee minors. During their journeys throughout the EU, some unaccompanied minors obtain a definitive residence status, while others become undocumented after their temporary protection ends at age 18 or they are still waiting for the outcome of their asylum application. In this article, we focus on the meaning of ‘waiting’ for 14 unaccompanied refugee …

  • The impact of daily stressors on unaccompanied young refugees’ mental health: A longitudinal study

Malte Behrendt, Elizabeth Pfeiffer et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2022

189 UYRs from diverse backgrounds in Greece, Italy, and Belgium, and conducted two additional waves of interviews, accompanying them for approximately 2 years on their migratory and settlement trajectories throughout Europe. Data were analyzed via growth curve modeling. Results showed that both material and social stressors have a long-term negative effect on anxiety and depression symptoms, while stressful life events only have a significant eff…

  • The development of an analytical framework to compare reception structures for unaccompanied refugee minors in Europe

Ine Lietaert, Malte Behrendt et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Work•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 4

The UN Convention of the Rights of the Child stipulates that unaccompanied refugee minors (URM) are entitled to specific and adapted accommodation structures and care. Despite the general strive in EU policy to reach common standards for those reception structures, they still vary largely, resulting in unequal treatment and care conditions. In this article, we aim to build an analytical framework, based on central features of concrete reception p…
