    Kenneth A Lockridge, Kenneth Lockridge•CHAPTER•European and Non-European…•2019

The basic function of the sistema de castas in colonial Oaxaca was to preserve the power base of the Spanish elite. Colonial society in Oaxaca—as elsewhere in the colonies—was based on conflicting principles. In Oaxaca as well as elsewhere in New Spain, many individuals of mixed racia…

  • Remembering Rhys Isaac

    Kenneth A Lockridge, Kenneth Lockridge•ARTICLE•Rethinking History•2012

Some of the late Rhys Isaac's friends and colleagues were reflecting via email on Rhys and on his significances for them and for the profession. They did this because they needed to, and to help two of them who had been asked write the obituary for the Journal of Southern History that ends this suite of remembrances. The author of this essay, ‘Remembering Rhys Isaac', wrote this memoir of him out of his personal and from their shared knowledge, a…

  • Robert Bolling and Thomas Jefferson

    Open Access•Kenneth A Lockridge•ARTICLE•Journal of Family History•2003

Robert Bolling was an acquaintance of Thomas Jefferson and a fellow agitator for revolution against Britain. In his ceaseless ambition and violent hatred of the British and of the ruling clique in Virginia, Bolling seems to resemble the ferocious young revolutionaries of Robespierre's France. Like them, he seemed determined to create a new world in which he could succeed, and like them he died in the effort. A mutual friend said to Jefferson on h…
