Corporations and society
This extended Review Article assesses the changing role of the corporation in history, using the 2018 book by Oxford scholar Colin Mayer entitled ‘Prosperity’ as a basis for the analysis. This is a traditional review article centred around the Mayer book, but as we end we take our argument, albeit tentatively, to other related issues, beyond the Mayer argument. The corporation may be viewed in a positive sense as a creator of wealth and ‘prosperi…
Two of the most eventful years in the history of the South African Reserve Bank
The SA Reserve Bank (SARB) was created as a result of an earlier gold standard monetary crisis that unfolded after World War I. From 1919, South Africa nominally maintained the gold standard, but not the conversion of banknotes into gold. This article seeks to discuss the SARB's views on the gold standard controversy, and to highlight the different attitudes of the first two governors, Clegg and Postmus, attitudes that have not previously been exa…
The rise and fall of a social democratic economic and social policy alternative in the ANC (1990–1996)
This article re-examines existing interpretations of the ANC's economic and social policy choices during the negotiations that led to South Africa's democracy. The divergence but also convergence crucially in economic policy thinking of key policy actors within the ANC and the National Party (NP) led apartheid regime is contrasted. The National Party's economic policy agenda is discussed with attention to its key ‘technocratic’ policy actors and …
Shadow of Liberation
Exploring in detail the twists and turns of the African National Congress’ economic and social policy-making during the transition era of the 1990s, this book focuses on the primary question of how and why the ANC, given its historical redistributive stance, did such a dramatic about-face and moved towards an essentially market-dominated approach
The role and influence of the IMF on economic policy in South Africa’s transition to democracy
Many commentators have pointed to the 1993 International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan, which occurred on the eve of South Africa’s democratic elections, as a key factor in explaining the shift in African National Congress (ANC) economic policy in the 1990s. This argument is now invariably taken for granted. Little understanding of the nature of the Compensatory and Contingency Financing Facility (CCFF) is displayed, nor has any hard evidence been pro…
Vella Pillay
Between the late 1940s and the early 1990s, Vella Pillay made a major contribution to South Africa’s liberation struggle. This article focuses on three aspects of his contribution: as a revolutionary procuring funds and training for the ANC’s military struggle, as a leader of the anti-apartheid and boycott movements, and as a highly trained intellectual producing economic policy analyses. In the mid 1960s, Pillay was suddenly prevented from holdi…
How Global Geo-Politics Shaped South Africa's Post-World War I Monetary Policy
The purpose of this paper is to highlight using international archives, the extent to which America's attempts to anchor its increasingly dominant global economic power and specifically the struggle between London and New York as the centre of global finance, impacted on the nature and character of the monetary policy advice given by these two international experts, as evident in their work on the Kemmerer-Vissering Commission. We show that Kemme…

Managing South African transformation
Sport has historically been an important element of South African popular culture, even though it was divided along racial lines for much of the country's history. In post-apartheid South Africa, sport is seen by politicians, sports officials and many ordinary people as a means to surmount race and class barriers and to forge nationhood. But sport remains a site of acute contestation over what transformation means: ‘merit’ versus ‘affirmative act…

Banking, Credit and Capital in Colonial Natal, c.1850-1910
In 1843 Natal, on the south east coast of Africa, became a British colony after a contest between Boer and British forces which had culminated in the battle of Congella. The colony was not particularly wealthy; its resources being made up primarily of wild game and cattle, the latter chiefly in the possession of the yet unsubjugated Africans of the area. The Zulu state was still intact and abutted the northern borders of the colony. One of the ea…

Indian merchants anddukawallahsin the Natal economy, c1875-1914
In the early years of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, Natal provided an ideal environment in which Indian merchants could flourish. Under‐supplied with money and goods, with relative stability and with few bureaucratic hindrances, Indians could import both their goods, their skills and their time‐tested commercial and financial methods. Although the first wave of merchants found a niche mainly in the market for trade, credit and money…
