  • The Boulder model's fatal flaw

    George W Albee•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2000

The author argues that the Boulder model contained a fatal flaw that has distorted and damaged the development of clinical psychology ever since. It is suggested that the uncritical acceptance of the medical model, the organic explanation of mental disorders, with psychiatric hegemony, medical concepts, and language was the fatal flaw. The author contends that after World War II, psychologists were needed to provide psychiatric services for the v…

Psychologists have neglected the role of the social, economic and political systems in determining behaviour. Rather, our field, consciously or unconsciously, has been instrumental in upholding the status quo. We have accepted society's ruling ideas that perpetuate exploitation, especially of women in the world of work. Women are often the last to be hired and the first to be fired. They are employed part-time and fired early to avoid the cost of…

  • Speak no evil

    George W Albee•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•1997

Responds to comments by T. P. O'Brien and P. Cox (1997), and M. L. Perla (1997) regarding the author's (G. W. Albee, see record 84-09296) article on prevention science. Albee discusses the problems in Perla's call for more public visibility for prevention programs using social marketing principles, and disagrees with O'Brien and Cox's argument for the separation of science and politics

    Ellen A Lane, George W Albee•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1965•References: 5

Intelligence scores from second, sixth, and eighth grades were significantly lower for children who became schizophrenic adults than for their siblings. Thus, low socioeconomics or low-intellect families cannot entirely account for poor performance among schizophrenics. Correlations between subjects and siblings were extremely low in contrast to the high relationship of normal siblings
