Beyond Marx and Other Entries is a truly original book by David Gleicher, author of The Rescue of the Third Class on the Titanic: A Revisionist History (Liverpool University Press, 2006). It explores deep areas of semiotics, joined with economics, anthropology, sociology, history and philosophy and political science, even Franz Kafka's literary works. These are communicated by entries, based primarily on Gleicher's actual blog Looking through the…

  • The dialogic lacuna in Fenves's Messianic Reduction

    Open Access•David Gleicher•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2014

This paper is a rereading of Peter Fenves's readings of leading texts among Benjamin's early writings; readings contained in Fenves's important work Messianic Reduction: Walter Benjamin and the Shape of Time. Of chief concern here is a crucial lacuna in Fenves's idea of Benjamin's thought, a blind-spot that reveals, in relief, Benjamin's radical and consistent rejection of a fundamental Cartesian/Kantian premise: what is commonly termed the ergod…

  • Social action, dialogism and the imaginary community

    David Gleicher•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2011•References: 8

We view political economy through a lens of dialogical thought associated with the writings of the Bakhtin circle (1918–1929). The individual is understood to be a “social subject” who engages by necessity in self/other dialogue, in the medium of language, and whose actions are inscribed by an existential social unit. The latter cannot “communicate itself” as a unified object, for the very reason that meaning is always in it. This basic dialogica…

    Open Access•David Gleicher, Lonnie K Stevans•ARTICLE•International Journal of Maritime…•2004•Cited by: 1

Titanic --based upon passenger characteristics. The main finding is that underneath the strong overt preference afforded in the rescue by the authorities to women and children over men, there was a complex class determination of survival rates among men, on the one hand, and women and children, on the other. We hypothesize that the statistical interactions of gender and class are explained by two crucial decisions made by the ship’s authorities: …

  • A historical approach to the question of abstract labour

    Open Access•David Gleicher•ARTICLE•Capital & Class•1983•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Few topics in political economy have enjoyed as much attention, or have been the center of such controversy as the "labour theory of value" - a theory which gained prominence in the writings of the classical school of the late-eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and which continues to be a major topic of Marxist political economy into the present period. The object of this paper is to outline a coherent approach to the labour theory of value by …
