    This paper reports and analyses survey data on the opinions of 353 top position‐holders in business, trade unions, federal and state politics, the Commonwealth Public Service, mass media, national voluntary associations, and major universities and research institutes during the latter half of 1975.     Two hypothesis relating responsibility, reward and performance were designed to test the Davis and Moore functional theory of stratification. Large companies in the private sector of the United States economy were selected as the source of empirical evidence to test the theory.     The natural histories of two anti-pornography campaigns (Midville and Southtown) are analyzed comparatively in the frameworks suggested by Smelser's (1962) theory of collective behavior and Gusfield's (1963) dramatistic theory of status politics. Both the Midville and Southtown campaigns are found, as hypothesized, to be norm-oriented social movements and symbolic crusades, and developmentally to fit the value-added stages of collective behavior.…
