Addiction and emotions
This paper argues that the emotional dynamics that structure a person’s relationship to drug use and their environment over time are central to understanding how agency is both operative and constrained in addiction. Drawing on qualitative interviews with 69 people with alcohol and opioid addictions, we conceptualize drug use as a form of affective scaffolding – a socially and materially situated strategy for emotion regulation. However, little is known about solutions military personnel themselves propose, and what is needed to implement those. Drawing on an action research project in the Netherlands Armed Forces, we identify four systemic collaborative requirements to implement initiatives aimed at …

Here, the interests of parents and children are weighed against each other using the medical ethical principles of respect for autonomy…

Agamben's Foucault
This article gives an overview of the influence of the work of Michel Foucault on the philosophy of Agamben. Discussed are Foucault's influence on the Homo Sacer cycle, on (the development) of Agamben's notion of power (and on his closely related notion of freedom and art of life), as well as on Agamben's philosophy of language and methodology. While most commentaries focus on Agamben's interpretation of Foucault's concept of biopower, his work a…
