  • Enrique Dussel (1934-2023)

  • Another unfinished project of modernity from a Latin American perspective

    Open Access•Oliver Kozlarek•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2023

  • From the humanism of critical theory to critical humanism

    Open Access•Oliver Kozlarek•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 14

Following Max Horkheimer, I will first attempt to reconstruct an anthropology that essentially wants to be understood as critical social research. I will then pursue the question of humanism in critical theory. In doing so, I want to show that a reference to a normatively substantive humanism does actually exist in critical theory. On the other hand, I want to show that this humanism is anything but unambiguously and systematically formulated but…

  • Octavio Paz

    Open Access•Oliver Kozlarek•ARTICLE•Araucaria•2020•Cited by: 1

  • Two Sociological Traditions in Latin America

    Open Access•Oliver Kozlarek•CHAPTER•Postcolonial Reconstruction: A…•2016

This article presents an analysis of the development of political science in Mexico and its contemporary characteristics; but instead of doing it through a traditional historical reconstruction, it reviews this process based on a meta-analysis. The simple narrative of the evolution of literature allows conceiving its development and the moments of qualitative change in the discipline regarding its institutionalization, the definition of its field…

  • Toward a Postcolonial Sociology in the Work of Octavio Paz

    Open Access•Oliver Kozlarek•CHAPTER•Postcolonial Sociology•2013

In this chapter I argue that the search for a sociological postcolonial critique of modernity should not restrict itself to academic sociology. In Latin America a strong tradition of essayists has at times assumed genuinely sociological tasks. As I have argued elsewhere (Kozlarek, 2009) the Mexican poet and essayist Octavio Paz should be read in this fashion. In what follows I try to show that what could be termed Paz's sociological critique of mo…

  • Moderne als Weltbewusstsein

    Open Access•Oliver Kozlarek•BOOK•Moderne Als Weltbewusstsein•2011

  • La crisis de la sociología académica en México [The Crisis of Academic Sociology in Mexico]

    Open Access•Oliver Kozlarek•ARTICLE•International Sociology•2006•Cited by: 1

  • Critical Theory and the Challenge of Globalization

    Open Access•Oliver Kozlarek•ARTICLE•International Sociology•2001•Cited by: 2•References: 3

In recent years the concept of globalization migrated successfully from the discourse of the mass media into the realm of social theory and political philosophy. But this migration does not only evince the changes of economic, political and social realities, it also expresses the need to revise our theoretical toolboxes. Theory itself becomes the target of this scrutiny. Do we really need political and social theories, once the illusion of a well…
