  • Scholarly and Public Responses to “Contracting for Sex in the Pacific War

Open Access•Amy Stanley, David Ambaras et al.•ARTICLE•Japan focus•2023

    J. Mark Ramseyer's 2020 article “Contracting for Sex in the Pacific War” provoked numerous highly critical responses from the general public and the scholarly community. Our group composed a report that analyzed the article and concluded that it should be retracted because it misused and distorted evidence. After more than two years of investigation, during which Ramseyer published a response to his critics, the editors of the International Revie…

  • B enjamin U chiyama . Japan’s Carnival War

    Open Access•Sayaka Chatani•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2021

If one were to go to open-stack archives in Japan or its former colonies, he or she would always encounter a few booklets or magazine issues that appear extremely out of place sitting amid serious-looking, monotonous wartime publications: vulgar and gossipy, sensual and sensational, products for bad-taste consumerism if judged crudely. In Japan's Carnival War: Mass Culture on the Home Front, 1937–1945, Benjamin Uchiyama found a profound meaning i…

  • Revisiting Korean Slums in Postwar Japan

    Open Access•Sayaka Chatani•ARTICLE•The Journal of Asian Studies•2021•References: 2

Korean shantytowns existed in every large Japanese city from the postwar years through the late 1960s. Japanese people recall them as secluded, dirty, impoverished, and dangerous. To many scholars, their existence confirms the transwar continuity of Japanese oppression of underclass ethnic minorities. But zainichi Koreans who grew up in such slums, which they called tongne, offer inspirational stories and fond memories of living there. This artic…

Pacific War, and the history of colonial Korea. What is written here is our work, but it was made possible due to the efforts of a much wider network, including historians and colleagues around the globe, who generously contributed their expertise. We base our findings below on our experience reading and interpreting Japanese historical documents, as well as our common investment in producing responsible scholarship

  • A Man at Twenty, Aged at Twenty-Five

    Open Access•Sayaka Chatani•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2020

In the early 1870s, when the Meiji Japanese government introduced the universal army conscription system, the age at which the conscription exam was administered, set at twenty, became a critical moment in people's lives. Although the Japanese army itself has gained much scholarly attention, the arbitrariness of its age stipulation directs us to an underexplored yet critical intersection between society and the state. Age twenty reprogrammed the …

  • Nation-Empire

    Sayaka Chatani•BOOK•Nation-Empire•2018

By the end of World War II, hundreds of thousands of young men in the Japanese colonies, in particular Taiwan and Korea, had expressed their loyalty to the empire by volunteering to join the army. Why and how did so many colonial youth become passionate supporters of Japanese imperial nationalism? And what happened to these youth after the war? Nation-Empire investigates these questions by examining the long-term mobilization of youth in the rura…

  • Between “Rural Youth” and Empire

    Sayaka Chatani•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2017

Between 1937 and 1945, hundreds of thousands of (especially rural) young men in colonial Taiwan expressed an embrace of Japanese imperial nationalism and applied to become volunteer soldiers. It created a “volunteer fever” across the island, showcasing the frantic ideological mobilization of Japan’s wartime empire. By examining the grassroots process of imperial youth mobilization in the Taiwanese countryside, this article explains the social and…

  • The Ruralist Paradigm

    Open Access•Sayaka Chatani•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies in Society…•2016•References: 22

How did the Japanese Empire, while adamantly adhering to assimilationism, manage the politics of colonial difference in the interwar years? How should we situate the seemingly exceptional conduct of Japanese colonial rule from a comparative perspective? To examine these questions, this article analyzes the mindsets of mid-level colonial bureaucrats who specialized in social work. Social work became a major field of political contestation in the p…
