  • The Embodied Practices of Breastfeeding

    Cindy A Stearns•ARTICLE•Women & Politics•2013•Cited by: 11•References: 36

Breastfeeding is a uniquely embodied part of parenting. It is a time-consuming task that is fundamentally centered on mothers' bodies for as long as breastfeeding occurs, which may be weeks, months, one year, or much longer. In this article I argue that an enhanced and sustained research focus on the embodied dimensions of breastfeeding has the potential to raise questions and provide insights about breastfeeding initiation and duration, a major …

  • Cautionary Tales About Extended Breastfeeding and Weaning

    Cindy A Stearns•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2011

Extended breastfeeding is uncommon and accorded limited research attention in the United States. In this article I analyze in-depth interviews with 66 breastfeeding mothers in Northern California. Mothers reveal their understanding of extended breastfeeding through descriptions of the surveillance of breastfeeding and cautionary tales. I examine the form and content of cautionary tales, emphasizing the pervasive culture of surveillance that under…

In the United States, all the major medical and public health organizations are strong promoters of breastfeeding, citing the health benefits to both baby and mother (Kukla 2006). The American Academy of Pediatrics describes human milk as "uniquely superior for infant …

This article reports on women's experiences of breastfeeding in public as revealed through in-depth interviews with 51 women. The current construction of the good maternal body requires women to carefully manage the performance of breastfeeding in specific ways and with particular attention to the dominant notion of a sexualize…

  • Physicians in Restraints

    Open Access•Cindy A Stearns•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•1991•Cited by: 1•References: 8

This study examines the implications of contemporary bureaucratic organizational forms for professionals and their clients by considering the case of doctors working for health maintenance organizations (HMOs). Physicians are gatekeepers who define patient access to health care resources. The study finds that gatekeepers within some HMOs are constrained by the organization of medical practice. The most important organizational constraints over ga…
