In this exploratory study we introduce conversation analysis as a method for locating the significance of the life story or personal narrative in the everyday lives of the elderly. To illustrate our hypotheses, we draw upon a small sample of recordings of conversations between elderly dyads and compare them with comparable data collected among young adults. We suggest that among old people there is a broad recalling of the past in the context of …

  • Temporal Frames: Time and Talk in Organizations

    Open Access•Deirdre Boden•ARTICLE•Time & Society•1997•Cited by: 10•References: 28

Time is of the essence in modern organizations; yet most of the work of managers, workers, service providers and a wide range of professionals is conducted routinely through the time-intensive activity of everyday, informal talk. This article examines the reflexive and recursive relation of time and talk in the constitution of organizations. It suggests that organizational work is paced and positioned through a variety of `temporal frames'; these…

  • People Are Talking: Conversation Analysis and Symbolic Interaction

    Deirdre Boden•CHAPTER•Symbolic Interaction and Cultural…•1990

When people come together, they talk. Not always, nor everywhere, but most of the time that is what they do. They talk in bed, on the phone, in the classroom, in the judge's chambers, in the physician's office, in jury deliberations and counseling sessions, on tea breaks and on airplanes, around the dinner table and across the boardroom, in crisis and in comfort. Talk is the stuff, the very sinew, of social interaction. The mundane or momentous t…
