  • The Transition to Adulthood

    Open Access•Scott R Eliason, Jeylan T Mortimer et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•2015•Cited by: 19•References: 56

We examine the relationships between objective life-course structures and the subjective sense of timing of adult roles and acquisition of adult identity. Hierarchical latent class analysis is applied to longitudinal data from the Youth Development Study in order to describe roles related to school, work, family formation, and living arrangements from age 17 to 30. The transition to adulthood in this cohort is well represented by five pathways pr…

  • Multiple Disadvantages

    Open Access•Rachel Kahn Best, Lauren B Edelman et al.•ARTICLE•Law & Society Review•2011•Cited by: 49•References: 59

A rich theoretical literature describes the disadvantages facing plaintiffs who suffer multiple, or intersecting, axes of discrimination. This article extends extant literature by distinguishing two forms of intersectionality: demographic intersectionality, in which overlapping demographic characteristics produce disadvantages that are more than the sum of their parts, and claim intersectionality, in which plaintiffs who allege discrimination on …

  • When Organizations Rule

    Lauren B Edelman, Linda H Krieger et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•2011•Cited by: 68•References: 105

This article offers a theoretical and empirical analysis of legal endogeneity—a powerful process through which institutionalized organizational structures influence judicial conceptions of compliance with antidiscrimination law. It finds that organizational structures (e.g., grievance and evaluation procedures, antiharassment policies) become symbolic indicators of rational governance and compliance with antidiscrimination laws, first within orga…

  • Goodness-of-Fit Tests and Descriptive Measures in Fuzzy-Set Analysis

    Open Access•Scott R Eliason, R Stryker•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•2009•Cited by: 13•References: 37

In this article the authors develop goodness-of-fit tests for fuzzy-set analyses to formally assess the fit between empirical information and various causal hypotheses while accounting for measurement error in membership scores. These goodness-of-fit tests, and the accompanying logic, provide a sound inferential foundation for fuzzy-set methodology. The authors also develop descriptive measures to complement these tests. Examples from Stryker and…

  • Application of Association-Marginal Models to the Study of Social Mobility

    Open Access•Joseph B Lang, Scott R Eliason•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•1997•Cited by: 8•References: 22

Researchers studying social mobility are often interested in examining both the association between origins and destinations and the relationship between the marginal distributions of origins and destinations. Often, this has resulted in an attempt to partition various models into components of, or derive indexes for, exchange/circulation mobility and structural mobility. As an alternative, or perhaps supplement, to such concerns, here the author…

Scott R Eliason, Dagmar Krebs et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•1995

A compendium of the theories and methods of measuring attitudes, as used by social scientists and psychologists, politicians, educators, market analysts, and others. Covers attitudes about things as well as about behavior, structural determinants and their quantitative contribution to the explained

  • Modeling Manifest and Latent Dimensions of Association in Two-Way Cross-Classifications

    Open Access•Scott R Eliason•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•1995•References: 26

In this article, the author develops a model that combines the RC(M) association model with the linear-by-linear association model for the analysis of two-way contingency tables. This combination provides a useful extension of both models that is applicable under many research conditions. A primary advantage of the model is that it allows the researcher to assess the influence of manifest factors on the row/column association while controlling fo…

  • A General Statistical Framework for Adjustment of Rates

    Open Access•Clifford C Clogg, James W Shockey et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•1990•Cited by: 4•References: 31

A general framework is presented that integrates standardization procedures common in demography, biometrics, and other areas with statistical methodology for the analysis of log-linear models. A family of rate-adjustment methods is derived from the log-linear model; the conventional method of direct standardization is a special case. Extensions of earlier methods include (a) adjustment for three-factor interaction, (b) adjustment for marginal as…

  • Labor-Market Experiences and Labor-Force Outcomes

Clifford C Clogg, Scott R Eliason et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1990•Cited by: 17

This article presents a comprehensive framework for studying the linkages between previous labor-force behavior and current labor-force positions. This approach can be used to study labor-force dynamics in new ways and to show how margianl work consists of several types of labor-market experience. These include most forms of job search or employment behavior identified in previous sociological and economic literature. Labor-force outcomes include…

  • A Flexible Procedure for Adjusting Rates and Proportions, Including Statistical Methods for Group Comparisons

    Clifford C Clogg, Scott R Eliason•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1988•Cited by: 20•References: 4

Statistical models for analyzing multivariate relationships among discrete variables have become very popular in sociological research in the past several years. These models are generally in the log-linear family and include log-frequency models (conventional log-linear models for cell frequencies) log-odds models (logit models and more general multinominal-response models) log-odds-ratio models (association models) and log-rate models (includin…

  • Some Common Problems in Log-Linear Analysis

    Open Access•Clifford C Clogg, Scott R Eliason•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•1987•Cited by: 28•References: 16

Several problems often encountered in research using log-linear models for categorical response variables are discussed. The issues covered are (a) determining the degrees of freedom for a model, (b) analyzing sparse data, (c) analyzing weighted data, (d) modeling rates, and (e) interpreting results

  • On Regression Standardization for Moments

    Open Access•Clifford C Clogg, Scott R Eliason•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•1986•Cited by: 8•References: 12

Polynomial regression models can be used to standardize means of endogenous variables for moments of exogenous variables. In other words, standardized means obtained from polynomial models adjust for group differences in location and shape parameters that characterize distributions of exogenous variables. The suggested approach is a natural extension of the conventional method of regression standardization for means (or first moments) of exogenou…
