Acts of betrayal. Reading the letters of Wilhelm Stekel to Sigmund Freud
This paper presents a discussion of the previously unpublished correspondence between Stekel and Freud. The authors start with a brief overview of most important historic events and facts that constitute the context against which these letters should be read. The matters cover questions of publishing policy, personal priorities, and psychoanalytic principles. The authors suggest that the Stekel letters may have been preserved by Freud as evidence…

The Self-Marginalization of Wilhelm Stekel: Freudian Circles Inside and Out (Path in Psychology)
As both an early disciple of and influence on Freud, Wilhelm Stekel enjoyed a unique position within the analytic movement. More recently, he has been notable more for his ostracism from Freud's sphere and little else. This Self-Marginalization of Wilhelm Stekel brings a fresh perspective on Stekel, revealing the complex, symbiotic bond between mentor and follower in its many social, interpersonal, and psychological forms."--BOOK JACKET

An interview with Michael Fordham
In the course of early interviews on the history of psychoanalysis, I saw Michael Fordham in the late summer of 1965. We concentrated primarily on the differences between Freud and Jung, as well as the characteristic distinctions between the two schools that they founded. Fordham also talked about some of his personal contacts with Jung

Edoardo Weiss: The House that Freud Built
Edoardo Weiss (1889-1970) was a favored disciple of Freud and is acknowledged as the founder of psychoanalysis in Italy. Although he was the author of six books and over a hundred professional papers, he has remained a shadowy figure. In this volume, Paul Roazen evaluates the significance of Weiss's own contribution to psychoanalytic thought and practice and presents a fascinating picture of the reception given to Freud's thought in Italy. Despit…
Freud and his followers
In the late 1890s Sigmund Freud (1856–1939), who had been trained as a Viennese neurologist, created a new field, psychoanalysis, which was designed to understand and treat neurotic afflictions. Although not a political thinker per se, Freud contributed indirectly, and some of his followers directly, to modern political theory. Politically, Freud was something of a conservative liberal, sceptical in outlook and suspicious of utopian schemes. His …
Interviews on Freud and Jung on Freud and Jung with Henry A. Murray in 1965
Henry Murray became one of the legendary figures in the history of American psychology. Not only was he a leading pioneer in the field of personality theory, but he created (with Christiana Morgan) the Thematic Apperception test. He also took a leading role in making psychological profiles for the American government's Office of Strategic Services during World War II. For years Murray headed the Harvard Psychological Clinic, and also worked on th…
Cultural Foundations of Political Psychology
The Wolf Man's Burden (review)
The historiographic literature about Freud has been abundant, even in the face of an increasingly positivistic atmosphere that has been hostile to the sides of psychoanalysis that qualify as mental or "spiritual." Books of Freud's letters, all of which sell poorly, still continue to be published, and in the end his various correspondences will overshadow in length the Standard Edition of his collected psychological works edited by James Strachey.…

The Controversial Discussions: Edward Glover and the Origins of "Double-Barrelled Training"
I attempt to rehabilitate Edward Glover's historical reputation, based on unpublished interviews as well as recently found documentary material. This should make one of the defining moments in the history of British psychoanalysis more plausible. Glover was an eloquent heresy-hunter - against Jung, Rank, Klein, Alexander, and others - yet the polemical side of him represents only one aspect of his career. During the Controversial Discussions Glov…
Using Oral History about Freud: "A Case in His "Secret Essay
Personal interviews, whatever their inevitable shortcomings, can be a unique avenue of historical knowledge. In the midst of my collecting information from many people who knew Freud, Helene Deutsch--she and I were then living in Cambridge, Massachusetts--became one of my key sources of information. It was a typical part of my routine to ask any of the early analysts I met about the precise details connected with the patients they may have receiv…

American culture has been unusually receptive to psychoanalytic systems of thought; and Erik H. Erikson, the most eminent contemporary exponent of ego psychology, has been particularly influential. His ethical orientation, as well as some of his key clinical concepts, has matched distinctively American needs. Yet Erikson has also helped to liberate us from the constraints of early psychoanalytic thought. His psychology has been a way of getting a…

Encountering Freud: The Politics and Histories of Psychoanalysis
In this volume Paul Roazen examines different national responses to Freud and the beginnings of psychoanalysis. He examines Freud's work in the contexts of law, society, and class, as well as other forms of psychology. Encountering Freud includes a brilliant essay on Freud and the question of psychoanalysis' contribution to radical thought, in contrast to the conservative tradition. Roazen takes up the extravagant claims of Marcuse and Reich, and…
