  • Empirical similarity for revealing the US interest rate policy

Open Access•Vasyl Golosnoy, Yarema Okhrin et al.•ARTICLE•Empirical Economics•2025

We model the Fed’s decisions about interest rate adjustments via the flexible nonlinear empirical similarity (ES) concept which relies on ideas of case-based reasoning particularly suitable for decision making under uncertainty. We postulate that the Fed’s adjustment decision in a given situation should be close to those in similar economic situations. We evaluate the empirical fit of the ES concept in comparison with the linear reaction function…

  • Grundtvigske impulser i norsk skole. Tre eksempler – tre århundrer

    Open Access•Merethe Roos•ARTICLE•Prismet•2025

This research article sheds light upon how Grundtvig’s ideas are a substantial part of the cultural heritage that is conveyed through Norwegian schools, and that this heritage is an important part of the schooling and education in Norway, also in our own time. I will enlighten this thesis through three examples. The first of these is Hartvig Nissen, who had a decisive influence on the Public School Act in 1860. The second is Helge Sivertsen, who …

  • Encountering Post-War Norway

    Open Access•Merethe Roos•ARTICLE•Studia Theologica - Nordic…•2025•References: 8

The article addresses two textbooks, published in 1955, in the subject Religion for Norwegian primary schools. The books were written by Laura Hordvik and Karl Marthinussen, and Aksel Skretting. Even though both books have a strong confessional and Evangelical-Lutheran identity, I will argue that the presentation of theology in Hordvik's and Marthinussen's book is adapted to and contextualised in a post-war Norwegian setting in a different way th…

  • Teologi som fortolkningsnøkkel

    Open Access•Merethe Roos•ARTICLE•Historisk tidsskrift•2024

  • Narratives in economics

Open Access•Merethe Roos, Michael Roos et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Surveys•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 28

There is growing awareness within the economics profession of the important role narratives play in the economy. Even though empirical approaches that try to quantify economic narratives are getting increasingly popular, there is no theory or even a universally accepted definition of economic narratives underlying this research. First, we review and categorize the economic literature concerned with narratives and work out the different paradigms …

Merethe Roos, Kjell Lars Berge et al.•BOOK•Exploring Textbooks and Cultural…•2021

This volume addresses a gap in previous research and explores Nordic textbooks chronologically and empirically from the Protestant Reformation to our present time. The chapters are written by scholars from universities in Finland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway, countries that distinguish themselves with a rich tradition of textbook research. The authors represent different academic traditions and use a wide range of scholarly methods and perspective…

  • Scottish education through Norwegian eyes

    Open Access•Merethe Roos•ARTICLE•History of Education•2021

The article presents and analyses the first part of Norwegian educator Hartvig Nissen’s (1815–1874) comprehensive report from his study tour to Scotland in 1853. Nissen occupies an important place in Norwegian nineteenth-century educational history and in nineteenth-century history in general, and he is regarded as the main driving force behind the most important Norwegian nineteenth-century School Act, ratified in 1860. The article sheds light u…

  • Nordic Childhoods 1700–1960

Reidar Aasgaard, Marcia J Bunge et al.•BOOK•Nordic Childhoods 1700-1960•2017

When the story of Scandinavian literature is being told in an international context, the Swedish proletarian novels of the 1930s are frequently held up as the more important of the regional canon. 1 In these celebrated novels, childhood and children are at the center-so much so, that I would suggest that the child is one of the more prominent motifs of Swedish literature between the two World Wars. Narratives on childhood were not new in any way …

  • Å velte en kjempe. Modellesere og tekstkulturer i Nils Egede Hertzbergs tekster

    Open Access•Merethe Roos•ARTICLE•Sakprosa•2016

Studien vise…

  • Modeling Radical Uncertainty and Anticipating Uncertain Change with Models

    Merethe Roos•ARTICLE•Forum for Social Economics•2016•References: 5

In this paper, I argue that agent-based modeling and simulation in a complexity framework can be useful scientific tools to think about the uncertain future. I will argue that the usefulness of this approach depends on its capability to generate surprise and discuss what conditions are needed for surprises to happen. The main value of agent-based models and simulations is to produce possible futures. This is the anticipation function of a model. …

Sweden and Denmark were subject to different press regulations in the last decades of the eighteenth century, not least c…

  • Information, Learning and Expectations in an Experimental Model Economy

    Open Access•Merethe Roos, Michael W M Roos et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2013•References: 27

The experimental ‘learning‐to‐forecast’ literature finds that subjects use simple linear backward‐looking models when forecasting in environments with little to no inout the economic framework. We study the formation of expectations in a laboratory economy of monopolistic firms and labour unions with almost complete knowledge of the model. We observe simple backward‐looking rules, but also a considerable share of model‐based expectations using in…

  • How important is geography for agglomeration

    Merethe Roos, Michael W M Roos•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2005•Cited by: 6•References: 1

The economic geography literature distinguishes between two types of reasons for economic agglomeration. Regional concentration of economic activity can be attributed to "rst nature" meaning geographic advantages and disadvantages given by nature or to "second nature" meaning agglomeration economies by the interaction of economic agents. Several recent studies tried to estimate the relative importance of the two types of explanantion. Most of the…
