Response to Iannaccone: Three Important Clarifications
The editor asked if I wished to respond to the article on church growth research by Laurence Iannaccone. The article criticizes a collection of past studies, many of which I participated.in or at least observed while they were underway. I believe that some clarifications would be helpful to readers. Iannaccone's pitfalls should better be termed statistical judgment calls or debatable analytic judgments. None of these judgments were errors made ou…
Vanishing Boundaries: The Religion of Mainline Protestant Baby Boomers
Types of Denominational Switching among Protestant Young Adults
Using a survey of young adults who grew up Presbyterian, we identified four motivations of people who switched denominations: (1) switch due to interfaith marriage; (2) switch after moving to a different town or neighborhood; (3) switch due to dissatisfaction with one's church; and (4) switch due to personal ties and influences. The third motivation was often associated with a conversion or renewal of commitment. Switches for the first two reason…
Vanishing Boundaries: The Religion of Mainline Protestant Baby Boomers
This in-depth survey provides a vivid overview of the religious world of the Baby Boomers. The authors worked with a national sample of persons confirmed in the Presbyterian Church, examining the religious faith of Baby Boomers and exploring the reasons they gave for leaving or staying in the church. The authors identify eight types of young adults--half of them churched and the other half unchurched. Their findings provide some unexpected result…

Determinants of Church Involvement of Young Adults Who Grew up in Presbyterian Churches
An interview study of 500 young adults from 33 to 42 years old who grew up in Presbyterian churches provided data for testing the importance of specific determinants of church involvement. We posited a general theory of plausibility structures. We found influence of early religious socialization to be weak. The influence of cultural broadening during the college-age years was also weak, except that it liberalized beliefs. The strongest determinan…

A study of 3,247 United Church of Christ congregations assessed the explanatory power of numerous factors for growth or decline in 1970-78. Overall decline was 10.4%. Larger churches declined proportionately more than small churches; city churches declined markedly while small town and rural churches remained stable. Recently established churches grew the most. Congregational youthfulness was a key institutional factor; younger congregations grew…

A Validated Intrinsic Religious Motivation Scale
Research on intrinsic and extrinsic religion has been troubled by conceptual diffuseness and questionable scale validity. Hunt and King have proposed greater specificity in conceptualization and measurement in future work. This paper attempts to specify and measure a single crucial dimension identified by Hunt and King, namely ultimate versus instrumental religious motivation. Two validation studies were done utilizing persons nominated by minist…

Dependent variables included church attendance, organizational participation, dollars contributed, and percent of income contributed. The deprivation theory was not supported. The child rearing theory, saying that parents with school-age children p…
Religiosity and Prejudice in Northern and Southern Churches
Four theories purporting to explain patterns of prejudice among church members were tested separately and simultaneously using matched samples of Presbyterian and Methodist church members in the North and the South. Status concern and dogmatism were the strongest determinants of prejudice in both North and South. Religious variables such as orthodoxy and ethicalism proved to be weaker and associated only with anti-black prejudice, not anti-Semiti…

The scholarly distance theory of Lehman and Shriver, concerning differential impact of disciplines, was not supported. There was little evidence of a of science fun…

Church participation and positive attitudes toward the church both decreased from 1948 to 1974, but orthodoxy of religious beliefs did not change after 1967. The percentage of students repor…
