  • Migrant Maths Teachers: Deficit, Translanguaging, and Growing Authority

    Open Access•Alan Benson•ARTICLE•Languages•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 25

This article draws from a longitudinal case study of trainee (the term used in official documentation related to Initial Teacher Training (ITT) in England and with some reservations throughout this paper) and early-career teachers (ECT) of mathematics. The sample represents migrant teachers that the Immigration Act of 2020 seeks to attract to the UK to address national shortages identified by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC). The analysis e…

  • A Numbers Game: Quantification of Work, Auto-Gamification, and Worker Productivity

    Open Access•Aruna Ranganathan, Alan Benson•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•2020•Cited by: 24•References: 70

Technological advances and the big-data revolution have facilitated fine-grained, high-frequency, low-cost measurement of individuals' work. Yet we understand little about the influences of such quantification of work on workers' behavior and performance. This article investigates how and when quantification of work affects worker productivity. We argue that quantification affects worker productivity via auto-gamification, or workers' inadvertent…

  • Are Bonus Pools Driven by Their Incentive Effects? Evidence from Fluctuations in Gainsharing Incentives

    Open Access•Alan Benson, Alan M Benson et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2018•References: 39

Bonus pools, in which a worker's realized bonus depends both on a worker's share of the pool (which serves as the incentive) and on the size of the pool (which is largely outside of the worker's control), are a common method for distributing incentive pay. Using data on the variation in the size of the bonus pool generated by a US manufacturing plant's gainsharing plan, which varies incentives for quality and worker engagement, the authors evalua…

  • Rethinking the Two-Body Problem: The Segregation of Women Into Geographically Dispersed Occupations

    Open Access•Alan Benson•ARTICLE•Demography•2014•Cited by: 10•References: 43

Empirical research on the family cites the tendency for couples to relocate for husbands’ careers as evidence against the gender neutrality of household economic decisions. For these studies, occupational segregation is a concern because occupations are not random by sex and mobility is not random by occupation. I find that the tendency for households to relocate for husbands’ careers is better explained by the segregation of women into geographi…

  • The Effect of Feedback from Pupil to Teacher on Assessment for Leaning and Visible Learning: An Ethnographic Case Study in a Community School in England and the Outcome in a State High School in Queen…

    Open Access•Daniel Ndisang, Alan Benson•ARTICLE•Education Research International•2014•References: 6

This study shows that there is positive regulatory effect of feedback from pupils to teachers on Assessment for Learning (AfL), classroom proactiveness, and on visible and progressive learning but not on behaviour. This research finding further articulates feedback from pupil to teacher as a paradigm shift from the classical paradigm of feedback from teacher to pupil. Here, the emphasis is geared towards pupils understanding of objectives built f…

  • The Long Haul Effects of Interest Arbitration: The Case of New York State's Taylor Law

    Open Access•Thomas A Kochan, Thomas Kochan et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 20

The authors examine debates about the effects of mandatory interest arbitration on police and firefighters in New York State under the Taylor Law from 1974 to 2007. Comparing experience with interest arbitration in the first three years after the law was adopted with experiences from 1995 to 2007, the authors find that no strikes occurred under arbitration and that rates of dependence on arbitration declined considerably. Moreover, the effectiven…
