  • The History of the Idea of the Lesbian as a Kind of Person

    Nan Alamilla Boyd•ARTICLE•Feminist Studies•2013•Cited by: 1

The HistoryoftheIdea oftheLesbian as a Kind ofPerson Nan Alamilla Boyd I'm going to start with the observation that the term lesbian is contested. One of the reasons why lesbian is contested is that lesbian history, as a field, often confuses the identity, as a container, with the community or social form that engages that identity. Historians wonder: Does someone have to verbally identify as a lesbian to be part of a lesbian community? Can we ca…

  • San Francisco's Castro district: From gay liberation to tourist destination

Nan Alamilla Boyd•ARTICLE•Journal of Tourism and Cultural…•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 7

In the early 1970s, San Francisco's Castro district transformed from an economically depressed Irish-Catholic neighbourhood into a politicized gay neighbourhood. The history of this transformation overlaps significantly with the production of a gay-spending zone in the same district. A behind-the-scenes organization, the Golden Gate Business Association, played an important role in this transformation. Founded in 1974, this organization sought to…

She argues that the commun…

Same-Sex Sexuality in Western Women's History Nan Alamilla Boyd (bio) From the articulation of sexual desires to the construction of sexual communities, same-sex sexuality has played an important role in western women's history. However, same-sex sexuality has most often been understood in relation to gender rather than race or region. As part of a larger project on the history of San Francisco's lesbian and gay history, this essay attempts to li…

  • The Materiality of Gender: Looking for Lesbian Bodies in Transgender History

    Nan Alamilla Boyd•ARTICLE•Journal of Lesbian Studies•1999•References: 2

Lesbian and transgender histories often recuperate the same historical figures; however, many lesbian spaces (like the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival) have excluded lesbian-identified male-to-female transsexuals. Through an analysis of historical inclusion and socio-political exclusion, this essay examines the relationship between "birth bodies," gender and sexuality. It argues that the lesbian body appears in history through the naturalization …
