  • Navigating off-grid living

    Open Access•Senija Causevic, Deniz Guler•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning C…•2026•References: 20

This paper explores London’s continuous cruising community through Polanyi’s double movement theory, analysing how boat dwellers navigate between market commodification of waterways and collective practices of protection and re-embedding. Drawing on seven months of ethnographic research, participant observation, and reflexive thematic analysis, we explore how itinerant liveaboards negotiate semi-off-grid living as both a technical infrastructure …

  • In but not fully of Europe’

Open Access•Ana Aceska, Derek Bryce et al.•ARTICLE•European Urban and Regional Studies•2025•References: 10

The European Union (EU) and Council of Europe (CoE) are in a continuous struggle to identify the internal ‘Europeanness’ of their narratives, borders, boundaries, and regions. Since the 1980s, they introduced numerous cultural policies and heritage initiatives to identify and promote what their policy rhetoric calls ‘European identity’, a concept always used in the singular. These policies and heritage initiatives validate only certain aspects of…

  • Aboard Boats on The Inland Waterways of England and Wales

Open Access•Helen Underhill, Ben Bowle et al.•ARTICLE•Shima•2025

In three vignettes of boat-dwelling on the canals and rivers of England and Wales, authors from across disciplines find common themes of the emergent precarity of life afloat, desires for freedom that, for many, motivate a life on the water; and the importance of boat-dwelling as offering an escape from, and an alternative to, economic crises and inequities. The example of an 'Eco-Mooring Zone' in central London prompts a discussion of anxieties …

  • Reclaiming heritage from anti-communist discourse

    Open Access•Senija Causevic•ARTICLE•Annals of Tourism Research•2019•Cited by: 8•References: 47

This article explores how challenging socio-political contexts have influenced the revival of antifascist heritage sites in post-Yugoslavian states. Despite the official politics of promoting national hegemony through adhering to neoliberal norms, these sites promote the values of shared humanity and antifascism. Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork, this article argues that socialism and antifascism have returned via the rediscovery of ut…

  • Measuring Tourists’ Emotional Experiences

Open Access•Sameer Hosany, Girish Prayag et al.•ARTICLE•Travel Research Bulletin•2015

This study is an extension of Hosany and Gilbert’s original research on the development of a scale measuring the diversity and intensity of tourists’ emotional experiences toward destinations: the Destination Emotion Scale (DES). The DES consists of 15 items, representing three emotional dimensions: joy, love, and positive surprise. Although the DES displays solid psychometric properties, additional evidence is required of the scale’s validity. U…
