Do Internet searches for Islamist propaganda precede or follow Islamist terrorist attacks
Using a Vector-Autoregressive (VAR) model, this paper analyzes the relationship between Islamist terrorist attacks and Internet searches for the phrases such as "join Jihad" or "join ISIS." It was found that Internet searches for "join Jihad" and "taghut" (Arabic word meaning "to rebel") preceded the Islamist terrorist attacks by three weeks over the period January 2014 to December 2016. Internet searches for "kufar" (the derogatory Arabic word f…

Culture and Plane Crashes
Early studies found evidence of a positive correlation between Hofstede's power distance scores, which measure the extent to which those without power defer to those with it, and plane accidents in different countries. However, these studies did not control for the level of economic activity (Gross Domestic Product-GDP) and severe weather conditions in these countries. This paper uses regression analysis to estimate the effects of number of fligh…

Health department officials stated that these increases appeared to be due to the more widespread use of social media like Tinder, Grindr, and Facebook, which allow users to readily connect with and meet others. The purpose of this study was to see if U.S. states that have more users of social networking sites, dating site…
Crimes and violence in Mexico
Drug-related violence is now an everyday occurrence in Mexico's northern border-states. While it often appears that all crimes are on the rise in the border region, the actual number of alleged offenders caught and brought to court differs significantly for different types of crime. Using panel data for Mexico's 31 states plus the Federal District from 2004 to 2008, it was found that there were more alleged offenders caught per 100,000 inhabitant…
Public Sympathy for O. J. Simpson
This paper examines those factors affecting public attitudes about the O. J. Simpson trial and the American criminal justice system. The separate and combined effects of these factors–which include race, age, gender, income, and education–were estimated using a logit model. It was found that blacks were more likely than whites to be sympathetic to Simpson and to believe he was innocent of the crimes he was charged with. Older individuals, males, …
Macroeconomic adjustments for debt-laden economies
In this article we formulate a simple economic model to analyze the effects of changes in the money supply, the national government deficit, and the exchange rate, on foreign debt and the debt-income ratio of four Central American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. The model was estimated using annual data from 1960 to 1992. Our results indicate that currency devaluation, contractionary monetary policy, and national gove…

Utilizing a general equilibrium framework, this paper studies the economic effects of price regulation in competitive market structures. The analysis considers both the short-run and long-run implications of price regulation upon factor rewards and allocaticns and upon the production of quality. It also characterizes the adjustment path to a competitive long-run equilibrium. The positive relation between regulated price and the production of qual…
