Telling Oneself through Someone Else’s Life
This paper examines how telling someone else’s life story, especially if this person is a close relative, sheds light on the author him- or herself or at least invites readers to wonder about the author’s relationship to the person whose life is told. The text analyzed is Jeannette Walls’s “true-life novel” Half Broke Horses , in which the author has her grandmother tell her own life in the first person. Drawing on research about narratives of vi…
Performing Selves in the 21st Century
The introduction to the special issue “Performing Selves in the 21st Century” discusses the turbulent changes that both the theory and practice of life writing have undergone in recent decades, as well as the sociocultural and media context of contemporary autobiographical and autofictional storytelling. It also surveys the papers included in this issue, which, in their different ways, expose and analyze the strong inclination of 21st-century sel…
Soundscapes and storytelling in literary interviews
Interviews have long depended on recordings, but the interview ‘text’ has traditionally been transcribed and published in written form. Scholars therefore hailed the advent of digitization for making recordings available to a broader audience and displaying their orality. Despite this growing interest in the significance of speaking voices, other sonic aspects of interviews are still largely ignored. Set within the frameworks of multimodal resear…
Life storytelling across media and contexts
Time and Transformation in Autobiography
In this article, I discuss transformations of self over time in Candia McWilliam’s memoir What to Look for in Winter. In this book, the author writes about many life-changing events: her mother’s suicide, her two failed marriages, her alcoholism and her blindness, to name only a few. However, the book itself constitutes an attempt at transforming these experiences in the act of writing, to offer restitution to a life gone awry. Time plays a major…
Introduction
The three papers joined in this research-cluster issue investigate contemporary works of fiction by focusing on a common formal feature: the inclusion of abstract reflection. While making general statements about contemporary fiction is notoriously difficult, there is nonetheless a clear tendency in a wide range of texts to incorporate short theoretical or essayistic deviations from the narrative sequence. After a brief definition of ‘abstraction…
Reflections on Music in Fiction
Music and literature are sister arts whose affinities and intertwinement over time have been explored from musicological and literary studies perspectives. Music holds great fascination with both scholars and lay persons because it manages to move us deeply even if we do not know much about it in a technical or theoretical sense. Aesthetic theories of music have time and again assigned this art form a special, sometimes even a divine, status. Thi…

Second-Person Narration in Literary and Conversational Storytelling
Second-Person Narration in Literary and Conversational Storytelling Jarmila Mildorf (bio) This article explores areas of intersection between sociolinguistic narrative analysis and literary narratology. Specifically, I focus on a phenomenon that has recently received some attention in narratology but hardly any in the study of narratives told in face-to-face interaction: namely, second-person narration. Manfred Jahn (2005) defines second-person n…

Chicago: U of Chicago P, 2010. 209 pp. ISBN 978-0226260136, $25.00. Narrative research seems to have proliferated exponentially over the last two decades. The vast number of international collections of essays and monographs in the last three to four years alone attests to scholars’ unbroken, if not height…
Words that Strike and Words that Comfort
Linguistic violence against women comes in many guises. Feminist linguists have shown that derogatory, demeaning speech and sexist language are used in patriarchal societies to allocate to women a place marked by muteness and degradation. Among other forms of domestic violence, verbal abuse is often neglected because it hurts psychologically and emotionally rather than physically and thus remains ‘invisible’. This paper unravels the discursive dy…

Time to disclose, timing disclosure
Research has demonstrated that women are more likely to disclose domestic violence to a GP during the consultation in primary health care than in Accident and Emergency. Little is known of the process of disclosure in the context of primary health care, especially from the perspective of the GP. In this article we present data from a pilot study with GPs working in a city locality about their experiences of disclosure and the actual processes thr…
