Remembering my friend and colleague Gisela Bock
Gisela Bock was one of Europe’s finest historians and a pioneering contributor to the development of women’s history. In this remembrance, the focus is on the beginnings and growth of our 40-year friendship and mutual appreciation society, which in both cases transcend borders, languages, and time itself.
The Rights of Women (or Women’s Rights)
This chapter traces the emergence of published women’s rights demands in Western Europe and America. While this history begins with seventeenth-century French debates and broadened through the eighteenth century, it was in the immediate run-up to, and then during the course of, the French Revolution that arguments for women’s civil and political rights flared up and arrived at their modern expression. From Condorcet to Olympe de Gouges, many more…
The Cambridge History of Rights
The age of Enlightenment and revolutions produced some of our best-known declarations of rights, but they did not create the idea of rights. Writers during this age did such a good job at declaring rights that many historians and politicians later believed that they invented them. The fourth volume of The Cambridge History of Rights shows that the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are better understood as a time of transformation, extending rig…

Women's History at the Cutting Edge: A Joint Paper in Two Voices
This is, as the subtitle indicates, a joint paper in two voices. Each author has worked with her counterpart to revise what began as their position paper for the Round Table ‘Women’s History at the Cutting Edge’ at the International Congress for the Historical Sciences, held in August 2015 in Jinan, China, which met jointly with the International Federation for Research in Women's History (IFRWH). Chen Yan explains her perplexity about the retice…

Madame Ghénia Avril de Sainte-Croix, the Josephine Butler of France
This article discusses the contributions of Ghénia Avril de Sainte‐Croix (1855–1939), a very important early twentieth‐century French feminist, to the campaigns against regulated prostitution. Savioz, as she was known before her marriage in 1900 to Francois Avril, became a great admirer of the work of Josephine Butler and carried on her campaigns not only in France and in international congresses, but also at the League of Nations, following Worl…

This ambitious book explores challenges to male hegemony throughout continental Europe. It focuses especially on France, but it also offers comparative material on developments in the German-speaking countries and in the smaller European nations and aspiring nation-states. Spanning 250 years, the sweeping coverage extends from Portugal to Poland, Greece to Finland, Ireland to Ukraine, and Spain to Scandinavia—as well as international and transnat…

The New Sexual Politics of French Revolutionary Historiography
The subject of women-and the sexual politics of the revolutionary era -have been slow to inform general treatments of the French Revolutionary era. In the new overview works, as in the old, women and gender issues remain strangely absent, as for example, in Frantois Furet and Mona Ozouf's massive Dictionnaire critique de la Revolution franfaise or Donald Sutherland's France 1789-1815: Revolution and Counterrevolution.' Reflections on the Publishing Crisis in French History
Future publishing of books in French history by American scholars may be in jeopardy. In the face of dramatic declines in sales of works in European history, scholarly presses in the United States will have to find economic incentives beyond those now in existence to continue their support of our field and that of our colleagues without incurring unmanageable deficits. Some presses have already made sharp cutbacks in accepting manuscripts in Euro…
