Habitus, Globalization, and Cosmopolitanism: How Dispositions, Class, and Migration Shape Global Self-Identification Differently in 74 Countries
This paper critically examines conceptualizations of “transnational,” “global” or “cosmopolitan” habitus in migration, globalization and inequality research. We conceptualize habitus as a configuration of basic dispositions, using items from the Schwartz values battery, and compare the effect of habitual dispositions, class, and migration on cosmopolitan self-identification via country-specific multiple regression models, based on data from the W…
Social inequalities in international student mobility: Reviewing Conceptual Approaches
In recent years, research on international student mobility (ISM) has increased considerably. One recurring topic within this emerging interdisciplinary research field deals with the various social inequalities that exist in relation to accessing and participating in this form of mobility. However, while methodological and empirical aspects are becoming ever more refined, there is a paucity of discussion in relation to its theoretical concerns. A…
Theorizing Transnational Class Formation: Novel Approaches to the Study of Transnational Inequalities and Class-Making
Transnational class formation has been a subject of considerable interest in recent years. This article provides the theoretical and thematic framework to the special theme on 'Transnational class formation: identities, practices and symbolic classifications' and presents a review of current literature on transnational social classes, arguing that we need to complement this literature by also considering transnational class-making. We introduce s…
Habitus in the context of transnationalization: From 'transnational habitus' to a configuration of dispositions and fields
Ongoing transnationalization processes have deeply affected contemporary societies. One important aspect of this transformation is that people's skills and dispositions change, thus the ways they think about, perceive and evaluate the world are altered. In order to capture these changes conceptually, the notion of transnational habitus has emerged, especially within migration and inequality studies. Reviewing this research literature, however, we…
Narrative and Europeanization: Bringing together two processual notions
Narratives and the notion of Europe are closely interconnected, both by cultural frameworks of what constitutes Europe and 'being European', and by EU-related stories crafted for political purposes. In a broader, much more paradigmatic perspective, narrative inquiry suggests that stories, as constructed and reconstructed by agents, are to be considered constituents of social interaction and phenomena, in general. Narratives construct and constrai…
Europe as a narrative laboratory. Klaus Eder on European identity, populist stories, and the acid bath of irony
After an introduction by Sren Carlson that summarizes key aspects of Klaus Eder's theorizing regarding the role of narratives for the symbolic construction of "Europe" and European identity, the ensuing conversation between the two addresses some of the subsequent issues arising from this work. It thus deals, inter alia, with the concept of narrative resonance, the relation between narrative and network structures, and the (neglected) role of nar…

Intra-European mobility and the formation of a European society? German mobile graduates’ early careers in trans-/national professional fields
Despite current economic and political crises, the intra-European mobility of students and young, highly qualified professionals is still widely regarded as a central mechanism contributing to the formation of an emerging European society. Approaching this issue, the article draws on recent conceptual attempts, inspired by Pierre Bourdieu, Neil Fligstein and others, that conceive of a European society as a set of interwoven transnational fields, …
Social Class and Transnational Human Capital: How Middle and Upper Class Parents Prepare Their Children for Globalization
Due to globalization processes, foreign language skills, knowledge about other countries and intercultural competences have increasingly become important for societies and people's social positions. Previous research on social inequality, however, has dominantly focused on the reproduction of class structures within the boundaries of a particular nation-state without considering the importance of these specific skills and competences. Within Soci…

Educating Children in Times of Globalisation: Class-specific Child-rearing Practices and the Acquisition of Transnational Cultural Capital
Owing to globalisation processes, foreign language skills and familiarity with foreign cultures and institutions, along with similar skills and dispositions which we call 'transnational cultural capital', have gained in importance, affecting the positional competition between classes. Drawing on Bourdieu and based on semi-structured interviews with parents of adolescents, some of whom spent a school year abroad, we reconstruct class-specific diff…

Becoming a Mobile Student – a Processual Perspective on German Degree Student Mobility
A recurring question with regard to international student mobility/migration is why students go abroad. Most often, this question is answered by pointing out different factors, such as the students' stated reasons for going abroad, specific psychological traits, or differences in economic and social capital. This paper, however, takes a processual perspective by asking how students become geographically mobile, thus perceiving studying abroad not…
