  • Cleavage theory meets gender equality: Examining party positions in Germany

Stefan Wallaschek, Monika Verbalyte et al.•ARTICLE•European Politics and Society•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 21

The paper analyses party positions on gender equality policies in Germany. While these policies have been intensively studied in various national contexts and for different parties, less is known to what extent these positions are explained by socio-cultural or socio-economic cleavages. Based on an original party expert survey, conducted in Germany in 2021, we demonstrate that the political space in Germany on gender equality policies is strongly…

  • One conflict, two public spheres, three national debates: Comparing the value conflict over judicial independence in Europe across print and social media

Stefan Wallaschek, Kavyanjali Kaushik et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Information Technology…•2023•References: 21

Conflicts over the independence of judiciary as one of the European Union's core democratic values is one indicator of democratic backsliding among its member states. Based on the Europeanization framework, we compare this conflict in German, Polish and Spanish print media and Twitter from 2019 to 2021. In the countries that are strongly affected by the value conflict, Poland and Spain, Europeanization is less evident. In contrast, the German dis…

    Monika Verbalyte, Hans‐jörg Trenz et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Sociology•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 15

On the one hand, media is an instrument of social and political trust building: Through it, trustful citizens are formed and socialized as members of a political community. On the other hand, the media is also an object of trust. And the degree people trust the media and its products has important consequences for the legitimacy of government. The authors use data from their own survey to help answer the question of how trust correlates with patt…

    Open Access•Monika Verbalyte, Monika Eigmüller•ARTICLE•Culture Practice & Europeanization•2022•References: 14

In this paper, we explore how the public sphere in Europe changed in the COVID-19 pandemic, i.e., under conditions of extensive social isolation and limited physical contact opportunities. Using data from the Eurobarometer from 2020 and 2021, we show what role digital and social media in particular played in the pandemic. In doing so, we pursue the question of what significance these media had for attitudes towards issues of pandemic control and …

  • Same Same but Different? Gender Politics and (Trans-)National Value Contestation in Europe on Twitter

    Open Access•Stefan Wallaschek, Kavyanjali Kaushik et al.•ARTICLE•Politics and Governance•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 17

The progress achieved in women’s rights and gender equality has become the target of a backlash driven by “anti-gender” activists and right-wing populists across EU member states. To a large extent, this conflict takes place in the digital and social media spheres, illustrating the new mediatized logic of value contestation. Therefore, we ask to what extent are the debates about gender equality on Twitter similar in three European countries, and …

We argue that domestic transnational activities foster recognition of common, transnational interests and ide…

European political integration has largely been described as a process that is driven by elites rather than citizens. This does not apply to the field of European social policy, which is often influenced by individual actors and their particular interests. This specific involvement of individuals is based on politically created roles, such as European Consumer, European Worker and European Citizen, and the rights related to them. EU citizens now …
