  • El Paso – Juárez

    Kevin Curran, Kevin J N Curran•ARTICLE•Journal of Borderlands Studies•2021•Cited by: 1

The neighboring cities of El Paso, USA and Juárez, Mexico share a 440-year history. In the almost 100 years since radio came to both cities, listeners have found their favorite stations with little regard for which side of the Rio Grande in which it is licensed. This article starts with how radio developed in the region, a court case that set a US precedent, and the use of early Mexican stations to reach immigrants in the US. It then looks at the…

  • Hospitable Justice

    Open Access•Kevin Curran•ARTICLE•Law Culture and the Humanities•2011

This article is concerned with the uses to which Shakespeare put legal subject matter. I focus on three sonnets in which the speaker acknowledges himself as the victim of a crime committed by the young man, but pledges to testify against himself on the young man’s behalf. This strange justice, I argue, belongs to the philosophical tradition of hospitality, exemplified in a range of writings from St. Paul’s Epistles to work by Derrida and Lévinas.…

  • James I and fictional authority at the Palatine wedding celebrations

    Open Access•Kevin Curran•ARTICLE•Renaissance Studies•2006

The 1613 marriage of James I's daughter, Elizabeth, to Frederick the Elector Palatine linked two of Europe's strongest Protestant nations. The union presented the possibility of tilting the balance of power away from the Catholic Habsburgs and allowed fervent Protestants in England to imagine themselves taking a leading role in this endeavour. The present essay is concerned with the festivities, public and private, mounted in London to celebrate …

The Internet is an effective means of disseminating information to students within universities. It enables one to place documents on a Web server, which students can access on campus or remotely. We have developed a Web-based collaborative system, which enables students to work through lab-based tutorials with access to a lecturer at a remote location through a Web cam, e-mail and a chat room applet. The student also has access to other students…
