Convivial Scenes on the Strand, 1823
Adopting an associational and wandering approach, this article reconstructs some of the scenes and figures which might have been encountered by a visitor to the Strand in 1823. These include William Blake, in Fountain Court, or William Godwin near the church of St Clement’s, visited that year by his daughter Mary Shelley, with whom he attended an adaptation of her novel Frankenstein on a nearby stage. The scene depicted here around the Strand in …
LukáCs’ Red Revolution
Moving between autobiographical and biographical reflections on Lukács and the embeddedness of lives, his and briefly mine, in historical time, the persistent influence of his readings of culture and questions of form, science and a philosophy of praxis is to be reflected on. There is, in some quarters, a dominant Lukácsian reading of modernism, which he apparently dismisses as fragmentary and debilitating. However, there is much to be said about…

Devices and the Designs on Us
This parallel presentation of dust and devices, as they have appeared in recent history, attempts to illuminate our reliance on technical devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and the like, in the context of wars and shifts in political and economic ideologies. Devices—and their software—get old and require updating (think of iPhone generations). They are eventually consigned to the dustbin. What does the commitment to upgrading reveal about con…

This other atmosphere
Frequently humans are invited to engage with modern visual forms: emoji, emoticons, pictograms. Some of these forms are finding their way into the workplace, understood as augmentations to workplace atmospheres. What has been called the ‘quantified workplace’ requires its workers to log their rates of stress, wellbeing and subjective sense of productivity on a scale of 1–5 or by emoji, in a context in which Human Resources (HR) professionals deve…
Strawberries and Cream
Avant-garde filmmakers in the Soviet Union argued over the merits of the played film and the documentary film. They argued about the duration of shots, long or short. They questioned what constituted filmic material, camera subjectivity, the objective fact and whether film extended the eyes, and the capacity to see, or whether it wielded a fist, augmenting or bashing feelings. Shub contributed to these discussions, not least through her own film …
Anti-Fascism, Anti-Art, Doubt and Despair
Working through the artistic and theoretical contributions of anti-fascists Franco Fortini, Bertolt Brecht and Walter Benjamin, the article explores the ways in which a world lorded over by Donald Trump and his alt-right associates mobilises a Benjaminian ‘aestheticisation of politics’ alongside a populist manipulation of popular culture. Strategies developed by Brecht in 1934 to ‘restore truth’ to Nazi speeches by Goerging and Hess are used to c…
Catherine Russell, Archiveology
Nowadays, the whole of recorded image culture appears accessible to us. We have recourse to a vast archive, not just of personal photographs and video clips, languishing unviewed in the cloud, on dusty external drives and scuffed USB keys, but to all that has ever been recorded and is now findable on YouTube, Vimeo, in the digitalized archives of the BFI and other such collections. We eddy through fragments of the recorded past. Filmmakers and vi…
Liquid Crystals
This Roundtable began life as a public event on the subject of liquid crystals in our visual, material, media, scientific and artistic cultures. The event’s premise was that liquid crystals are the ur-form that constitute and govern Modernity and its after-shocks. For sure this is because the dialectic of liquidity and crystallization, of flow and refraction, is key to the advent of screen-based media (LCD TVs, computers and mobile devices) and t…

New German Adventures in Realism and Modernism
Some books appear written to throw up in the air the cards of knowledge, as they are currently stacked, in order to let them fall again in a new ordering, sometimes one that bears the marks of present interests. This may be the meaning of the prefix ‘post’. It is not that, in the process of an analysis becoming ‘post’, the former modes of conception are made redundant. Rather, those modes are rearranged, defamiliarised, and amongst them new accen…

A critical overview of the contribution of German Marxist Robert Kurz (1943-2012), focussing in particular on The Black Book of Capitalism: A Farewell to the Market Economy (first ed. 1999) and War for World Order: The End of Sovereignty and the Transformations of Imperialism in the Age of Globalisation (2003). This review explores the genesis and the main tenets of Kurz's theory - especially his concept of value, the automatic subject, crisis an…
Homes for Ghosts
Under the influence of Freud’s dream analysis, Benjamin writes down a dream about Goethe’s house, which he has visited before and in whose visitor’s book he finds his name ‘already entered in big, unruly, childish scrawl’ and at whose dinner table he finds places set for his relatives, ancestors and descendants. This leads him to exclaim: when the ‘house of our life...is under assault and enemy bombs are taking their toll, what enervated, pervers…

Film is rightly understood to be an art of movement, but stasis plays a role too, from the first films which cranked into seeming life out of stillness to the mech- 5 anisms of contemporary animation, which is pervasive in cinema today. This article explores the relationship of stillness and movement in early cinema and pre-cinematic optical technologies, which demand a flick of the wrist to produce movement out of stasis. Muybridge’s sequential …

On making-up and breaking-up
Walter Benjamin's writings on the Paris shopping arcades and nineteenth- century urban industrial culture are frequently referenced in contemporary examinations of ‘modernity'. In current cultural studies Benjamin's investigation of the aesthetics of merchandise and his insights into the social fact of mass consumerism are repeatedly invoked. Indeed these investigations may be alluded to even more frequently than reference is made to Benjamin's o…
The Multiple Identities of Walter Benjamin
In the August issue of Biography, a popular us magazine, the editor-in-chief prefaces some musing on that month’s star profiles, General George C. Marshall and Tina Turner, with an outline of the magazine’s core philosophy: ‘No two life stories are even remotely the same, even the ones
