Scale, stillness and the migrant subject
Migration traverses a number of scales – the geopolitical scale of immigrant numbers, the scale of settlements, and the intimate ontological scale of human agency and subjectivity. It would be mistaken to consider these as separate autonomous entities of scale; indeed, their forces and entanglement underpin the construction of migrant subjectivities. This article, in a special issue of Landscape Research devoted to an analysis of the Immigrant Ne…
The Disordering of Space in the Transformation of the Balinese Traditional House in Tourism Economy
Many parts of Balinese social life have been impacted by modernisation in the traditional house due to cultural tourism, which has fuelled the preservation of traditional Balinese culture. This study examines how the Balinese have accepted a modern level of living while maintaining traditional areas to preserve cultural heritage in their houses to show this paradoxical phenomenon. To examine this paradoxical phenomenon, memories of the Balinese p…
SNEJA Gunew - Снежа Гунев
Sneja Gunew continues to be a formidable intellect. This is evident in the written form where theories, ideas and debates were laid out with care and labour, but also with the consciousness of having something to say. It is also integral to the speaking practice in keynotes and discussion – as part of a ‘performative subjectivity’ in which the intellectual subject participates in an exchange of thought as spoken word, but in Sneja Gunew’s case, w…
Co-designing in Australia housing for people with intellectual disability
Background This paper provides an evidence base for practice in Australia from an integrative literature review of research on co-designing housing with people with an intellectual disability. The study asks: what methods and outcomes have been reported from including people with an intellectual disability in the co-design of their housing? Method The integrative review framework described by Whitemore and Knafl (2005) was used to analyse the lit…
Lines of Settlement
The value of archival documents quite often extends beyond their original purpose, as evidence contained within these artefacts, whether written or drawn, can provide veracity for new lines of heritage inquiry. Many settlements in the ‘new world’ were set out by land surveyors whose drawings charted the accurate placement and alignment of new streets and block perimeters laid upon drawings of the extant topographical landscape features. The paper…
Space and Culture
The dead, not unlike the sick, are historically quarantined from the space of the living. Spatial separation is a constituent of civilization and this is epitomized by an architectural and urban separation, indeed division, between the space of the dead and the space of the living. Cemeteries are historically located on the periphery, quartered off by a clearly demarcated boundary, or in a separate site altogether as it is called, the City of the…
Migrant Housing
Migrant Housing, the latest book by author Mirjana Lozanovska, examines the house as the architectural construct in the processes of migration. Housing is pivotal to any migration story, with studies showing that migrant participation in the adaptation or building of houses provides symbolic materiality of belonging and the platform for agency and productivity in the broader context of the immigrant city. Migration also disrupts the cohesion of e…
The design philosophy of Edenic gardens
This paper explores the Eden mythology in both western and eastern cultures, and its reflection on people’s perception and use of nature. It aims to examine how cultural ideologies and systems of beliefs in relation to Eden have affected landscape making and how landscape icons influenced other cultures subsequently. This study describes how narratives of Eden evolved and influenced landscape design by explaining the narratives of Paradise and Ar…
Ethno-Architecture and the Politics of Migration
Ethno-Architecture and the Politics of Migration explores the interface between migration and architecture. Cities have been substantially affected by transnational migration but the physical manifestations of migration in architecture and its effect on streetscape, neighbourhood and city – have so far been under-studied. This contributed volume examines how migrants interact with, adapt and construct new architecture. Looking at the physical, ur…
New Village Models
n\t\t\t\t\tZavoj is a mountain village in the Republic of Macedonia. While the village has become a site of emigration due to the mass exodus of its inhabitants, new house constructions have appeared. Scattered through deteriorating vernacular dwellings are new houses, and new fragments of houses attached to old houses. These new houses and house-fragments are introduced by emigrants returning to the village temporarily, and not by the remaining …
The Architectural Edifice and the Phantoms of History
Starting with the literal and physical role of the “ground,” this article attempts to bring this “ground” into a discursive arena. In particular, the author is thinking about the period at the end of a war, the period in between destruction and reconstruction, exemplified in some classic postwar films in which the architecture of the city is in a state of ruin—deformed, eroded, and dark—but there is no further destruction. The article calls this …
Architectural Frontier/Spatial Story
The “tools” of architectural discourse—maps, plans, sections, elevations, photographs—are one way of representing an architecture of the everyday. In this article, the theoretical problematic of representing the everyday is investigated through a specific site, Zavoj, a village in the Republic of Macedonia. How do we look at, document, and analyse a place that is outside the map of western architectural interest? The tools of architecture are sta…
The Migrants' Daughter's Study
The migrants' daughter's study is a space within the house of immigrants in which the daughter fulfils her tertiary education. Referring to the study, long inscribed and imagined as the place of a masculine individual subject, the article extends theoretical investigations of a discourse on gender and sexuality in architecture. It examines the relations between body, space, and language through the daughter's struggle to make and inhabit an indiv…
