Fuhgeddaboudit shugah! Social meanings of the New York City dialect in the semiotic landscape
This paper examines multilectal writing in New York City as part of the larger phenomenon of multilingual, multilectal and multiscriptal writing. It focuses on the written representation of two enregistered phonological features (i.e. non-rhoticity and the raised back vowel [ɔ]) as well as colloquial expressions that index the imagined speech style of many New Yorkers. It explores how these forms are disseminated across a range of public ‘languag…
Planetary repertoires? ‘Research is a zoo’: An invitation to an epistemic ‘party’
In this article, I hone in on complex, assemblaic relations of human, non-human, more-than-human, animal, spatial, digital, environmental, and political economic questions questioning the role that language and other modes of semiosis have in the powerful production of planetary matters and anthropocenic landscapes. New theoretical and methodological directions are paved in the field of linguistic and semiotic landscape studies that underscore en…
From the Side, You Should Look like a Japanese Ham Sandwich, No Gap Anywhere”: Exploring Embodied, Linguistic, and Nonlinguistic Signs in Enregisterment Processes of Bikram Yoga in Online and Offline …
This article analyzes the semiotic links between embodied, linguistic, and nonlinguistic signs found in a Bikram yoga studio in Oslo, Norway, and on its website, which are informed by other hegemonic sites of yoga circulation on a more global level, which include the Bikram franchise and Lululemon. Drawing on (digital) ethnographic data, I employ the analytical concepts of enregisterment (Agha 2007) and mediatization (Agha 2011), in order to trac…

Permanent or temporary homes: Investigating the discourses of lifestyle migration, lifestyle mobilities and multilingualism within a Norwegian context
Questions surrounding mobility and migration are often connected to matters of language, citizenship, socio-economic status and class that are inherently unequal between developed and less-developed nation states. Scholars of geography and demographics have conceptualized both internal and external/international migration with “push” and “pull” factors as salient reasons for mobility. Traditional causes of external migration and so-called “push f…
Street art as “street fetish”- a new signifier of social class? The case of Brazil’s “Beverley Hills”
This study explores street art's changing symbolic value and emplacement, the latter of which is reaching beyond the city limits and so-called 'public' space, where commissioned practices are being carried out on individuals' private homes and elite households in non-urban spaces. In this paper I focus on the process of “street fetish”, which has resulted from street art's contemporary institutionalization and shaped by complex socio-cultural, po…
Street art/art in the street – semiotics, politics, economy
The last decades have seen the ideological transformations of graffiti and street art once constructed as criminal acts and associated with urban decay to being acceptable and profitable forms of commercial art. The spaces and places where these art forms are found have long transcended streets to art galleries and corporate advertising billboards and campaigns making them "the most visible forms of global urban culture and urban transgression" (…

What are you doing here, I thought you had a kid now?’ The stigmatisation of working mothers in academia
The last decade has seen an increase of scholarly work within the social sciences critiquing neoliberal processes of our academic institutions. Much of this work has focused on metrics, paradoxes and politics. Few studies centre on the effects of these processes for women only and where they do exist, they are primarily located within the fields of critical geography, sociology and feminist studies. In this paper, I argue that as scholars of lang…
YO! or OY? - say what? Creative place-making through a metrolingual artifact in Dumbo, Brooklyn
This paper investigates a metrolingual language object and creative place-making in Dumbo, Brooklyn within the era of late capitalism. It is an analysis of how two simple letters ‘O’ and ‘Y’, when put together create two short words ‘OY’ and ‘YO’ yet carry exponential meaning about metrolingual language ideologies, language users and powerful social agents. An example of heteroglossic play and linguistic creativity, Deborah Kass’s multilingual ar…

Cooking lunch, that’s Swiss’: Constructing hybrid identities based on socio-cultural practices
This study looks at the discursive construction and negotiation of hybrid identities within binational couples.I analyze conversations produced by Anglophones married to German-speaking Swiss residing in central Switzerland.I employ Bucholtz & Hall's sociocultural linguistic model (2004, 2005, 2010), which views identity as emergent in social interaction and allows for the investigation of identity at various analytical levels. The analysis shows …
