A very British state capitalism
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in governments playing increasingly prominent roles as active economic agents. However, state capitalism does not necessarily serve broad developmental purposes, and rather can be directed to supporting sectional and private interests. As the literature on variegated capitalism alerts us, governments and other actors regularly devise fixes in response to a systemic crisis, but the focus, scale, and scope of the …
State Capitalism and the Firm
In this introduction to The Handbook of State Capitalism and the Firm, we provide an overview of state capitalism, its evolution, diversity, and theoretical implications. We clarify the tension between the market and the government that drives state intervention in the economy. A brief historical overview of state capitalism provides a much-needed background to explicit and implicit discussions of the diversity of dimensions of state capitalism. …
State Capitalism
The recent rise of companies from emerging markets, especially China, has led to a slew of studies based on the concept of “state capitalism.” However, definitions of this term vary significantly. We review how various leading authors use the term state capitalism to draw out differences between, and similarities within, those conceptualizations. By doing so, we seek to 1) define what “state capitalism” is (and is not); 2) demonstrate how the dim…
Sovereign Wealth Funds
This chapter introduces sovereign wealth funds (SWFs) and where they stand in the world of state capitalism. SWFs are gradually becoming leading participants in the alternative investor ecosystem, and are another expression of state capitalism. This chapter highlights the challenges of categorizing state investment funds, and argue that what sets SWFs apart is an ostensibly inter-generational savings focus. Through the usage of examples, we highl…
The Oxford Handbook of State Capitalism and the Firm
This handbook presents the latest theoretical and applied thinking on state capitalism, i.e., the institutional, policy, and ownership arrangements that reflect the direct influence of the state on the economy and firm behavior. It is a timely volume given the worldwide changes regarding the role of the state in the economy. Starting in the 1980s, there was an apparent process of retrenchment from earlier statism that had dominated most world eco…

Comparing Capitalisms
Various strands of the comparative capitalisms (CC) literature agree that the advanced economies have liberalized in recent years, bringing with it rising income and wealth inequality and job insecurity; although these perspectives differ in important ways, there is much common ground between them to explain this heightened level of inequality and insecurity. Through reviewing contributions to three key CC perspectives since 2007/2008, we argue t…
From Kinship to Trust
Research on recruitment has neglected the possible influence of political instability and civil wars. This article seeks to redress this gap, by providing insights into recruitment and selection criteria in African countries during a time of political instability, based on the case of Algeria. The research focuses on how small businesses in highly unstable political environments vet candidates, the recruitment channels they use, and the type of c…
The End of Apartheid and the Organisation of Work in Manufacturing Plants in South Africa's Eastern Cape Province
The election of 1994 radically changed the environment within which management chose its labour control policies. Prior to the change of government in 1994 plant practices were shaped by the fact of substantial protection against foreign competition, widespread illiteracy, and a set of laws and policies that offered few protections for individual workers or organised labour. Since the change in government the political and legal environment has s…

How the vote will go
This article reports the results of a survey (conducted in August 1993) among African potential voters in the Eastern Cape. It was revealed that the overwhelming majority of support went to the two main liberation movements (ANC and PAC). Although the ANC emerged as the most popular organisation, the survey revealed important concentrations of PAC support in certain centres. Most respondents had a deep loyalty to the organisation they supported a…
