What's at Stake? Considering the Case for “Asian American Jazz”
This essay brings together my opening remarks as Director of the Center for Jazz Studies at Columbia University with my concluding thoughts offered as the final speaker on a panel with Hafez Modirzadeh and Jen Shyu at the Asian American Jazz: Past, Present, Future symposium held on February 17, 2023.When I wrote “Silent But Not Silenced: Asian American Jazz” sixteen years ago, there was very little published on Asian American involvement in jazz.…
Those Days Are Gone Forever

“This Is Who I Am”
Deracinated Flower
In this essay, I explore composer and pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi's articulation of a transcultural “rootlessness” which she developed by rendering non‐jazz influences, drawn most notably from Japanese musical aesthetics, within a jazz context. Her active infusion of traditional Japanese musical elements into large ensemble jazz music compositions and arrangements throughout the 1970s reflected her changing attitude regarding the aesthetic or musica…
Emergency! Race and Genre in Tony Williams's Lifetime
This essay investigates the ways in which Tony Williams's fusion band, Lifetime, challenged and complicated the meanings jazz held as both a tradition of popular music and as art music. The band merged psychedelic and hard rock styles with jazz, producing music that unmasked the racialized assumptions behind genre categories, helped introduce rock's enthusiastic use of new recording technologies as aesthetic ends in themselves to jazz recordings …
Silenced but Not Silent
Singing About Architecture
Alien Encounters
Cusack's souped-up Camaro and his good ole' American ingenuity (aided and abetted by a French tomboy). In Sixteen Candles (1984), a kooky and lecherous Chinese exchange student named Long Duck Dong provides ''comic relief '' in his supposedly misplaced desire for the masculine female jock over the more appropriately feminine (and annoyingly petulant) heroine Samantha. In a number of these films, we witnessed fears of an '' Asian invasion'' in U.S. …
