    Open Access•Karolina Kuberska, Sarah Turner•ARTICLE•Illness Crisis & Loss•2025•References: 40

Pregnancy loss continues to occupy an uncomfortable space in public discourse. This article analyses articles in the UK press published between 2013 and 2023 referencing the Baby Loss Awareness Week (BLAW) that focus on narratives of personal experience of pregnancy loss. These narratives sit between the personal and the public, and constitute examples of public grieving that serve a range of purposes, from the expression of continuing bonds with…

  • Outside the (memory) box: How unpredictable objects disrupt the discourse of bereavement in narratives of pregnancy loss

    Danielle Fuller, Karolina Kuberska•ARTICLE•Mortality•2022

The memory boxes produced by UK charity and support agencies such as Sands are given to families who experience stillbirth and pregnancy loss. These memory boxes form part of a twenty-year-old practice of bereavement care. In this article, we focus on the aspects of memorialisation present in narratives of pregnancy loss that involve a variety of material objects that women selected and chose to keep either within or outside of a memory box. Draw…

    Open Access•Karolina Kuberska•ARTICLE•Etnografia Praktyki Teorie…•2017•References: 13

The goal of this paper is to analyse the phenomenon of sobreparto, a traditionally Andean postpartum condition, among Andean migrants to the lowland city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. Although matters of maternal health have usually be examined through the lens of traditional Andean understandings of the body, health, and illness, it is also analytically worthwhile to foreground the social and emotional dimensions of this postpartum illnes…
