Global synthesis for the scaling of soil microbial nitrogen to phosphorus in terrestrial ecosystems
Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are associated with the life history of all organisms. Soil microbes play essential roles in nutrient cycling and ecosystem dynamics. As compared to plants, however, our understanding of the soil microbial N versus P scaling relationship remains limited. In this study, we used a comprehensive dataset comprising 2210 observations from 422 sites worldwide to examine microbial C, N, and P concentrations and C:N:P rati…

The Phenology of Tropical Forests: Adaptive Significance and Consequences for Primary Consumers
Most tropical woody plants produce new leaves and flowers in bursts rather than continuously, and most tropical forest communities display seasonal variation in the presence of new leaves, flowers, and fruits. This patterning suggests that phenological changes represent adaptations to either biotic or abiotic factors. Biotic factors may select for either a staggering or a clustering of the phenological activity of individual plant species. We rev…

The Tragic Waste of the Black Mind and Talent
I am greatly honored and immensely pleased to be invited to present the first Charles H. Thompson Memorial Lecture. Before I turn to the subject of this address, however, I would like to say a few words about Charles H. Thompson, as I trust future lecturers who knew him personally will do, for our number will inevitably grow smaller as the years go by; but if each lecturer who knew Charles Thompson personally would follow this suggestion, somethi…

The Future of the Negro Private College: Philosophy and Program
Any effort to consider the future of the Negro private college necessarily involves the making of a number of assumptions and the drawing of a number of inferences. Both the assumptions and the inferences must, of course, be based upon the history of the Negro private college, an analysis of its present status and an assessment of the changing conditions which support or otherwise influence its operation
