Folk Paradigms of Justice in Commemoration and Heritage in the Postcolonial Netherlands
This study contributes to understanding how commemoration and heritage constitute part of a broader struggle for justice in the postcolonial Netherlands. By means of vignette-based interviews with opinion leaders, we investigated how folk paradigms of justice inform discussions about the role of statues in commemorative practices. Embedded in Nancy Frasers’ tripartite model of justice as redistribution, recognition, and representation, the study …
Framing justice in struggles over cultural heritage
Anchored in Nancy Fraser’s theorizing of justice, the current study seeks to scrutinise the entwinement of contemporary struggles over justice with controversies over the meaning and the role of heritage. Through a discourse-analytic exploration of Dutch political debates about the racialised figure of Black Pete, the study demonstrates how a debate over heritage might encapsulate a struggle over economic, cultural and political justice, and in p…
What is just and unjust in education? Role of inter-ethnic tensions in defining justice in education through the prism of media debates
By exploring carefully selected education-related debates that have taken place in and through news media in five European countries, the current study investigates the role of inter-ethnic tensions in organizing public imaging of justice in educational matters. It focuses in particular on analysing in what ways and on what levels of moral reasoning justice-related tensions in the realm of education are permeated with inter-ethnic conflict. The r…
Less-standard claims to justice through the lens of media debates on minority education
The coexistence, not always peaceful, of multiple and often rival, conceptions of justice in education policy and practice is well recognized and problematized in the academic literature. Relatively little is known, however, about what kind of justice-related considerations occupy the ‘public mind’ and/or inform what Nancy Fraser calls ‘folk paradigms of justice’. The current article seeks to shed light on the public construction of the ‘what’ of…
Justice and Vulnerability in Europe
Justice and Vulnerability in Europe contributes to the understanding of justice in Europe from both a theoretical and empirical perspective. It shows that Europe is falling short of its ideals and justice-related ambitions by repeatedly failing its most vulnerable populations.
Representative justice in the European normative framework and tensions with the national political discourses
Political discourses in Europe operate at the supranational, national and local level, with supranational institutions providing a normative framework for the policy making at lower governance level. However, the actual appeal of the legal, political and normative frameworks offered by supranational European institutions remains unclear. For example, while ‘justice’ is deemed constitutive of European values and ideals of democracy, and European i…
The Representation of Youth in the Dutch News Media
Research in social psychology shows that looking into the nuances in stereotyping is of vital importance due to unique emotional and behavioural reactions the different clusters of stereotypical representations may evoke. Media analysts, however, rarely apply a framework that would allow a systematic deconstruction of stereotypes conveyed in the media productions. In the current study, the Dutch news media representation of native and non-native …
How similar, how different? On Dutch media depictions of older and younger people
By providing information on society at large, the media help to establish and maintain relations between various social groups, such as between younger and older people. They may also disturb the formation or maintenance of such relations, e.g. by stimulating the ‘othering’ of the out-group members. The aim of the present study was to trace how the different strategies of ‘othering’ are applied by Dutch news media in their portrayal of older and …
Images of poverty in a selection of the Polish daily press
The social construction of poverty constitutes an important aspect of a country's welfare culture. Still amidst studies on poverty measurement, dynamics, causes and consequences, enquiry into the social or cultural (re-)presentations of poverty remains relatively infrequent, especially in Continental Europe. The current study addresses the issue of social/cultural representations of poverty by investigating the media portrayal of poverty in Polan…
Popular Explanations of Poverty in Europe
In this contribution we describe and explain the differences in popular poverty attributions that exist within and between 28 European countries. On the basis of the existing literature we distinguish five predictors: awareness of the existence of poverty, personal experience of disadvantage, personal values, socio-demographic background and structural and cultural country-level characteristics. Using data from the European Values Survey (EVS) 19…
Popular Explanations of Poverty
Various authors point to the connection between public perceptions of poverty and institutionalised strategies of dealing with the poor. The way the general public perceives the poor, and especially the causes of poverty, is generally assumed to have a profound influence on the legitimacy of anti-poverty policies. Yet studies on popular perceptions of and attributions for poverty are relatively infrequent. Moreover, a considerable share of existi…
