A procedural perspective on academic spin-off creation: The changing relative importance of the academic and the commercial sphere
Academic scientists who commercialize their research findings via spin-off creation have to transition from the academic sphere to the commercial sphere. Along this spin-off creation process, they face challenges adapting to the conflicting logics of these spheres. We hypothesize that throughout the three phases of this process, the importance of the academic sphere decreases while the importance of the commercial sphere increases. We collected a…
Entrepreneurial ecosystems: A dynamic lifecycle model
The concept of entrepreneurial ecosystems has been used as a framework to explain entrepreneurial activities within regions and industrial sectors. Despite the usefulness of this approach, the concept is under-theorized, especially with regard to the evolution of entrepreneurial ecosystems. The current literature is lacking a theoretical foundation that addresses the development and change of entrepreneurial ecosystems over time and does not cons…
The impact of innovation and innovation subsidies on economic development in German regions
Public innovation subsidies in a regional environment are expected to unfold a positive economic impact over time. The focus of this paper is on an assessment of the long-run impact of innovation and innovation subsidies in German regions. This is scrutinized by an estimation approach combining panel model and time-series characteristics and using regional data for the years 1980–2014. The results show that innovation and innovation subsidies in …
European Integration and Outward FDI from Central and Eastern Europe – Is There Any Evidence of Knowledge‐seeking
The European Union (EU) Member States in central and eastern Europe (CEE) witnessed a surge in outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) between 2000 and the start of the global financial crisis. This article investigates whether the European integration process altered the relative importance of host country location factors. In particular, we investigate to what extent knowledge‐seeking is a relevant investment motive, which has been documented …

Knowledge and Creative Destruction over the Industry Life Cycle: The Case of the German Automobile Industry
The paper investigates how pre‐entry experience, post‐entry experience and innovative activity affected the survival of German automobile firms over the period 1886–1936. A statistical survival analysis is performed which links instrumental variable estimation with the Cox regression. The main results are that all three knowledge components exert an independent and significantly positive effect on firm survival. Moreover, innovative activity is a…

The Twin Peaks in National Income: Parametric and Nonparametric Estimates

Change, Transformation and Development
For as long as one can remember, the edifice of the neoclassical economic syn thesis has been under attack. Critiques have focused on the extreme unreality of the assumptions that underpin the Arrow-Debreu theorems of welfare economics. They have queried the excessive formalism of the edifice, and the lack of practical significance of many of the results. They have castigated the neoclassical synthesis for its internal incoherence (lacking an ind…
