  • The Testaments of Toluca

    Bernard Grunberg•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2009

The study of wills fits into a wave of historiographies begun in the sixties with many works that have shed light on our knowledge of ways of thinking, including the works of Philippe Ariès, Michel Vovelle, François Lebrun, Alain Croix, and Pierre Chaunu. While these studies focused initially on France, America was not overlooked. In her pioneering study of 1962, Jacqueline de Durand-Forest noted the importance of indigenous testaments in Mexico.…

  • Documents of the Coronado Expedition, 1539 - 1542: They Were Not Familiar with His Majesty, nor Did They Wish to Be His Subjects

    Bernard Grunberg•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2008

In this work, Richard Flint and Shirley Cushing Flint present a collection of 34 documents concerning Coronado’s expedition between 1532 and 1542. Obviously, a great deal of this corpus was already available, notably in the two English texts, one by George Parker Winship (1896) and the other by George P. Hammond and Agapito Rey (1940). Moreover, many of the documents have been published in Spanish and disseminated in the Coleccion de documentos i…

  • Hernán Cortés: Cartas y memoriales

    Bernard Grunberg•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2005

In her book, María del Carmen Martínez Martínez presents 90 documents (including 74 letters or memoranda) written by Hernán Cortés between 1520 and 1538 in different places in Spain and America. Only one letter (document no. 17) was entirely handwritten by Cortés. These texts, until now unpublished, add to the body of his already known and published writings. Most of the letters were addressed to licenciado Francisco Núñez, one of Cortés’s cousin…

Horst Pietschmann, Bernard Grunberg•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•1997

  • The Origins of the Conquistadores of Mexico City

    Bernard Grunberg•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•1994•Cited by: 2

A N Y study dealing with the conquistadores inevitably brings with it great emotional impact. It represents a veritable Pandora's box for the historian who attempts to put forth themes that praise the individual exploits of the men, the glories of Spain, or, once again, the leyenda negra that stigmatizes all Hispanic colonization. This study chose to look at the conquistadores of Mexico City because they were the first group to come in contact wi…
