Towards interdisciplinarity in international business
The last frontier of globalization
Neglected elements
National culture and international business
The impact of country-dyadic military conflicts on market reaction to cross-border acquisitions
Switching analytical mindsets
Traditional value-centered approaches to the analysis of cultural variations have failed to capture group similarities across and beyond national boundaries, partly due to their reliance on variable-centered approaches that examine each cultural value in isolation, thereby ignoring the synergistic effects of cultural values. To fill this gap, we introduce a person-centered approach that allows us to identify subgroups of individuals who share a c…
When context trumps culture
Persuasion plays an important role in international business interactions. Within this domain, it is often argued that persuasion is a form of communication and as such embedded in cultural norms. It is also argued that forms of persuasion differ across cultures. The data described in this study of persuasive tactics deployed by Israeli and Indian business professionals in their attempts to resolve disputes with their partners suggest otherwise. …
Cultural distance asymmetry in expatriate adjustment
Purpose The current literature implicitly assumes a symmetric impact of cultural distance (CD) on expatriate adjustment. By using distance as a predictor of adjustment, the literature has rendered the direction of the flow irrelevant: a US expatriate in Germany is presumed to face the same hurdle as a German expatriate in the USA. Not only is there no evidence to justify that suggestion, but logic and related findings suggest just the opposite. T…
China's Economic Rise and the New Geopolitics
BACK TO THE FUTUREFollowing a quarter of a century of robust, double-digit economic growth, China is now poised to overtake the United States as the world's largest economy (in purchasing power terms) within two to three decades. When this happens, China will not only be ending a 150 years of US reign, but will also be reclaiming the primacy it first obtained a millennium earlier when it pulled away from western Europe to become the biggest econo…
The Chinese Century
"In the face of accelerating turbulence and change, business leaders and policy makers need new ways of thinking to sustain performance and growth. This book is source for stimulating ideas from thought leaders who provide new mental models to address changes in strategy, management, and finance."--Jacket
Institutional Distance and the Multinational Enterprise
Failure as a Consequence of Partner Politics
While it is widely recognized that international cooperative ventures suffer a high rate of failure, current theories, namely transaction costs, partner selection, bargaining and learning, offer limited and disjointed reasoning for it. Each of these theories is focused on a single aspect and on a limited phase in the venture’s life, neglecting the process that leads to eventual termination. To study this process, an in-depth analysis of the demis…

The Role Structure of Chinese Managers
The study investigates the role structure of managers in China's Henan province. The results produce a two-facet classification consistent with Shapira and Dunbar's findings for North American managers, yet displaying a number of unique features attributed to the Chinese business environment. The leader's role of the Chinese manager splits into task-related and relationship-oriented activities, and the monitor role is plotted across the informati…
The return of ‘the red eye disease’
Since China's implementation of economic reforms in 1979, income inequality has been a subject of considerable concern. This article examines the inequality of wages between provinces from 1981–1991 for all units, as well as for state and collective work units separately for 1981–1988. The findings show an increasing rate in wage inequality throughout the period, with implications extending to the political, social and economic areas
The Firm as a Total Institution
All organizations manifest some features of a total institution; however, no other commercial organization is as close to that metaphor as the Chinese state-owned enterprise (CSE). After establishing the similarity between the CSE and the total institution, the present paper uses four types of total institution to describe the CSE: a work camp, a religious order, a prison and a boarding school. The functions of each of the four for the Chinese sy…
Construct Dimensions in the Contingency Model
The diverse conceptualizations, operationalizations and measurements of uncertainty and structure may explain the inconsistent findings obtained for the contingency model. To examine this possibility, the present study simultaneously applies multiple measures of uncertainty and organizational structure using both factor analysis and Smallest Space Analysis to identify the underlying dimensions of those constructs and examine their interrelationsh…
Variations in the economic development of China's provinces
Robotics
Increasingly pervasive in modern industrial settings, robots pose a remarkable challenge to those concerned with the psychological and social implications of new technologies. This paper assesses the psychological and occupational problems typical to robotization, and reviews the suitability of conventional intervention techniques for robot‐related problems. ...the machine is conducting our future for us not only simply in direct answer to our di…
