  • ‘The System is Not Set up for the Benefit of Women’

    Open Access•Huschke•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2022

In this article, I draw on in-depth qualitative interviews with 23 women, conducted in 2019/2020, focusing on their involvement in decision-making during pregnancy and birth. The study is located in Ireland, where comparably progressive national policies regarding informed choice in labour and birth clash with the day-to-day reality of a heavily medicalised, paternalistic maternity care system. I represent the subjective experiences of a diverse …

  • Sex work and condom use in Soweto, South Africa

Huschke, Susann Huschke et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2020

Despite public health interventions targeting sex workers in an attempt to increase condom use, HIV still remains a significant health issue for those involved in the sex industry in many countries. In this paper, we analyse data collected as part of an ethnographic study of sex work in Soweto, South Africa. We show that the main problems with consistent condom use are clients who threaten violence if sex workers insist on condoms, clients who ar…

  • Empowering sex workers? Critical reflections on peer-led risk-reduction workshops in Soweto, South Africa

    Open Access•Huschke, Susann Huschke•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2019

Background: Sex workers in South Africa face various forms of structural and interpersonal violence, including police violence, exclusion from health services, and stigmatization and marginalization within their communities. In an attempt to counteract the harmful health effects of criminalization and exclusion, risk-reduction workshops are a key component of HIV prevention programs globally. This paper offers a critical investigation of Creative…

  • Challenges with seeking HIV care services

Open Access•Jepchirchir Kiplagat, Ann Mwangi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Results indicate multiple challenges faced by older adults that need attention in ensuring continuous engagement in HIV care. Targeted HIV care for older adults would, therefore, significantly improve their access to and experience of HIV care. Of key importance is the integration of other chronic diseases into HIV care and employing staff that matches the needs of older adults

  • Stopping the Traffick? The problem of evidence and legislating for the ‘Swedish model’ in Northern Ireland

    Open Access•Huschke, Eilís Ward•ARTICLE•Anti-Trafficking Review•2017•References: 1

In 2015, after two years of controversy, the so-called ‘Swedish model’—the criminalisation of paying for sex—became law in Northern Ireland as an anti-trafficking measure. Evidence from the ground in Northern Ireland, however, questions the enforceability and appropriateness of a sex purchase ban to significantly reduce or eradicate trafficking in the sex industry. First, it is unclear that criminalisation will change the behaviour of male purcha…

  • Commercial sex, clients, and Christian morals

    Open Access•Huschke, Dirk Schubotz•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2016

This article reports on the results of a study on men who pay for sex across Ireland. In presenting a detailed picture of the diverse group of sex workers’ clients, their motives and attitudes, we debunk the prevalent stereotypes about men who pay for sex, as continuously used in the public discourse about sex work on both sides of the Irish border: we show that the majority of clients do not fit the image of violent, careless misogynists. We arg…

  • Subjective health of undocumented migrants in Germany – a mixed methods approach

Open Access•Anna Kuehne, Huschke et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

Living without legal status has a negative impact on health and well-being. Limited access to care may further exacerbate physical and mental illness. Possibilities to claim basic rights and protection as well as access to care without legal status appear to be important measures to improve health and well-being

  • Giving Back

    Huschke, Susann Huschke•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology•2015•Cited by: 9•References: 27

In this article, I draw on my doctoral field work in Berlin (2008-2010), on the illness experiences of undocumented Latin American labor migrants, and on my work as an activist for the Berlin-based nongovernmental organization Medibüro, an anti-racist migrant health organization. I highlight how my attempts to 'give back,' and the various forms of engagements and commitments that resulted from it, shaped my relationships with actors in the field,…

  • Fragile Fabric

    Huschke, Susann Huschke•ARTICLE•New Community•2014•Cited by: 6•References: 37

This paper examines how undocumented Latin American migrants in Berlin manage to access therapy in the event of sickness despite their exclusion from the regular health care system in Germany. I argue that in order to receive medical attention, undocumented migrants rely on specific illegality knowledge, which, in turn, requires social capital, as information is acquired through informal social networks, mainly consisting of other Latin American …
