  • Perceived hypocrisy and deconversion in adolescents. The mediating role of irrational beliefs and identity styles

Beata Zarzycka, Kamil Tomaka et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Beliefs and Values•2024

Deconversion is a biographical change in which one goes from claiming adherence to a religion to departing from it. A meaning system model can help us understand the processes through which deconversion occurs. Drawing on that framework, we explored how perceiving hypocrisy in one’s religious setting influences adolescent deconversion. Irrational beliefs and identity styles of adolescents were examined as potential mediators of this relationship.…

  • The Spiritual Well-Being Scale in the Polish Catholic Setting

Open Access•Beata Zarzycka, Kamil Tomaka et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion and Health•2024

The population of Poland could be of particular interest to researchers studying religion and spirituality. Catholicism has played a significant role in shaping the country’s culture, history, and tradition and is considered a national religion. More recently, however, the processes of moving away from regular participation in religious services and loosening ties with the institution of the Catholic Church are marked (Polish Public Opinion Resea…

  • Human interaction with the divine, the sacred, and the deceased

    Open Access•Thomas G Plante, Gary E Schwartz et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2023

Humans have likely been attempting to communicate with entities believed to exist, such as the divine, sacred beings, and deceased people, since the dawn of time. Across cultures and countries, many believe that interaction with the immaterial world is not only possible but a frequent experience. Most religious traditions across the globe focus many rituals and activities around prayer to an entity deemed divine or sacred. Additionally, many peop…

    Raymond F Paloutzian, Daniel Perlman•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2023

This article memorializes Stuart (Stu) Oskamp (1930-2022). Professor Oskamp, an eminent social psychologist, made enduring contributions by applying social psychological knowledge to real-world problems, especially to the sustainability of the earth. Stu taught at Claremont Graduate University (CGU) from 1960 to 2000. While there he served as chair of the psychology department, chair of the entire graduate faculty, acting director of the School o…

  • Psychological and spiritual factors affecting well-being among military personnel engaged in remote combat

Rodger K Bufford, Anna Frise et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2022

The strongest predictors of distress were lack of meaning and feeling overextended at work. Emotional exhaustion and low existential well-being identified distressed crewmembers. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Spiritual Coping, Emotional Responses to Existential Challenges, and Character Strengths

    Amy L Ai, Arthur A Raney et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for the…•2022•References: 6

Over recent decades, massive natural disasters have increased in intensity. A 40-year literature review underscored the centrality of spirituality in such disasters but called for further scale development and studies further exploring the role of personality traits. As a response, the current study (1) validated a revised Using Private Prayer for Coping (UPPC-R) scale using data (N = 566) from Category 5 Hurricanes Maria and Michael, and (2) exa…

  • Faith Factors, Character Strengths, and Depression following Hurricane Michael

    Arthur A Raney, Amy L Ai et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for the…•2022•References: 5

Natural disasters have increased exponentially in recent decades, imposing existential threats to humans. Yet, surprisingly little research has explored the role of religion and spirituality (R/S) and transcendence-related character strengths in post-disaster depression. Using data (N = 491) from victims of Category 5 Hurricane Michael, this study examined whether R/S factors and character strengths helped to buffer against post-disaster depressi…

  • Processes of Believing, Mental Abnormalities, and Other Matters of the Mind

Rüdiger J Seitz, Hans‐Ferdinand Angel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Cognitive Science…•2021

Two categories of mental events – ecstatic or indescribable religious revelations and bizarre beliefs or behavior with related mental abnormalities – have been compared and contrasted in order to understand whether they are manifestations of different basic neural and psychological processes, or fundamentally the same. In popular terms, such comparisons point to the issue of the relationship between being religious and being mentally ill. McCaule…

  • Perceived spiritual support counteracts the traumatic impact of extreme disasters

Amy L Ai, Arthur A Raney et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2021

The findings highlight the function of PSS in survival. PSSS-S1 and -S2 are adequate measures for rapid and cross-cultural data collection in extreme disasters. The differential associations of PSS and moderators with the 2 outcomes can be interpreted in light of 2 forms of well-being, which may have implications for theory, research, and practice in trauma psychology. This article presents selected findings of the Values in Scholarship on Religion (VISOR) project. Conversations about the values and norms that ought to shape the academic study of religion are quite common but typically based on anecdotal evidence and personal experience. The goal of VISOR was to gather data that could ground debates about the values that scholars of religion prize. Here, we present statistical analyses of VISOR data that shed l…

  • The Spiritual Well-Being Scale

    Open Access•Raymond F Paloutzian•ARTICLE•HORIZONTE•2016

  • Relations between Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava Devotional Practices and Implicit and Explicit Anthropomorphic Reasoning about Kṛṣṇa

    Travis Chilcott, Raymond F Paloutzian•ARTICLE•Journal of Cognition and Culture•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Employing a narrative comprehension task procedure, this study tests the hypothesis that engagement in Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava religious practices, which are aimed at cultivating a personal relationship with the Hindu deity Kṛṣṇa, predict increased implicit attribution of anthropomorphic properties to him. Contrary to our hypothesis, multiple regression analyses of data from 184 native Krishna devotees in West Bengal, India, indicated that increased eng…

Notes1. A vote was taken twice. In 2004, greater than 50% favored the name change; in 2011, greater than 2/3 favored it, which was the margin required by divisional bylaws for a change in its name. One of the authors voted for, and one voted against, the name change.2. The present discussion is with reference to Western, especially American, contexts. Less was known about the issues in question in other areas, thus these remarks could not automat…

    Open Access•Raymond F Paloutzian, J T Richardson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•1999•Cited by: 61•References: 2

The question of whether religious conversion causes changes in someone's personality is examined in light of two bodies of literature-the research on personality change and the research on conversion. When the theory and research on personality change is applied to the question of whether conversion causes such change, the answer depends on what level of personality is of concern. Research on the relation between religious conversion and a variet…

    Raymond F Paloutzian, Brenda S Smith•ARTICLE•International Journal for the…•1995•Cited by: 4•References: 3

McIntosh's proposal to conceive of religion as a schema is examined in light of two levels at which a theory can be considered useful: (a) as an idea that integrates previous views of religion into one overriding theory, thus not negating earlier views but making them obsolete, and (b) as an addition to already existing views, thereby allowing us to generate research questions not previously stated. Schema theory could contribute to the field of …

  • The Role of Emotional Feelings

    Open Access•Raymond F Paloutzian•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•1975

Two divergent views regarding the role of emotional feelings exist among psychologists and Christians. These are that (a) behavior should follow from and be consistent with feelings, and (b) feelings are primarily reactions to behavior. A case of a male suffering from cyclic negative and positive emotional states as a consequence of deviant behavior and alternating comparison groups is analyzed from the perspectives of a cognitive consistency pri…

  • Conversion Experience, Belief System, and Personal and Ethical Attitudes

Open Access•Raymond F Paloutzian, Steven L Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•1978

In Study 1, 84 college students served as subjects. In Study 2, 177 adults of varying ages served as subjects. The same basic patt…

  • Note on the Attribution and Reinforcement Analyses of Altruism

    Open Access•Raymond F Paloutzian•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•1979

The attribution of an altruistic motive occurs when we observe prosocial behavior performed in the apparent absence of external controlling contingencies. The process by which this occurs is described, and an attribution analysis of the good Samaritan parable is presented. The limits of the reinforcement analysis of prosocial behavior are discussed, with emphasis on the difficulties inherent in resorting to hypothetical internal reinforcers

Recent attempts to relate theologies and belief systems to psychological concepts and research are based on three basic methodologies: (a) Documenting a parallel between psychological and theological concerns, (b) using religious belief and behavior as variables in basic psychological research, (c) suggesting theological reality as part of the process that accounts for religious experience. These fundamental approaches underlie both the articles …

As part of the growing interest in quality of life and subjective well-being, the Spiritual Well-Being Scale was constructed to measure the spiritual dimension. Research has shown good reliability for the scale and has provided encouraging support for its validity. It indicates well-being in a variety of spheres, including physical and mental health, psychological adjustment, and assertiveness. However, no norms have been published and little des…
