  • Comparisons of the Ejaculatory Response in Men and Animals

    Frank A Beach, WILLIAM H WESTBROOK et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1966

Observations and experiments relating to the causes and results of ejaculation in male mammals of several species reveal that in a number of different mammals, erection and emission can be mediated by purely spinal mechanisms. In intact males, emission is possible without genital stimulation, and the occurrence of emission is not automatically associated with orgasm in men or with the normal behavior sequelae to ejaculation produced in animals by…

  • Effects of Prolactin, Progesterone and Estrogen on Reactions of Nonpregnant Rats to Foster Young

    Open Access•Frank A Beach, James R Wilson•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1963

In one experiment 3 virgin rats were given 5 daily injections of 20 mg. of prolactin, 3 were given 5 injections of 10 mg. of the same hormone, and 3 received control injections of sterile water. At the end of treatment each female was tested on 3 days for tendencies to retrieve foster young a few days old. Some retrieving occurred, but it was confined to 2 of the 3 control females. The 3 rats previously serving as controls were next injected for …

    Frank A Beach•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1944

Methods Twenty virgin female rats raised in segregation were ovariectomized at 3 to 4 months of age. Estrous was induced in these animals by the injection of estradiol benzoate and progesterone. Each animal was observed in mating tests with a sexually vigorous male during 3 successive periods of induced estrous. Records taken during every test, included the number of times the female was mounted by the male, the number of times the female exhibit…

  • Analysis of Factors Involved in the Arousal, Maintenance and Manifestation of Sexual Excitement in Male Animals1

    Frank A Beach•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1942

A review of numerous experiments dealing with the mating behavior of males of various vertebrate species has suggested a tentative interpretation of the physiological basis of sexual excitement and copulatory reactions. The interpretation is not offered as a completely satisfactory explanatory theory,--but has been formulated with the thought that it may indicate profitable lines of experimental approach to the important problems with which it de…
