The hydro‐geomorphological setting of the Old Kingdom town of al‐Ashmūnayn in the Egyptian Nile Valley
The ancient Egyptian city of al‐Ashmūnayn (Minyā Governorate, Egypt) has been an important regional centre since at least the Old Kingdom (c. 2686–2160 BC). It is assumed to have been founded on the banks of the Nile, although no scientific evidence was hitherto available to support this claim. In this multidisciplinary study, the results of a geoarchaeological survey were combined with the study of pottery fragments. Boreholes placed at al‐Ashmū…
De l’outil au symbole
The stocktaking work on the Egyptian lithic collections of the Lyon’s Natural History Museum-Musée Guimet (France), now located in the Confluences Museum collections, allowed one of the authors (Raphaël Angevin) in 2016 to identify an atypical Predynastic flint object. The shape of a segment of the large truncated twisted blade (“Mostagedda knife”), labelled T.1224, evokes the hull of a boat. This article aims provides a detailed technological ex…
A history of the visualisation of the Hunters’ Palette and a tentative reconstruction of its missing part
The so-called Hunters’ Palette, one of the iconic objects of late Predynastic times, has attracted much scholarly attention since its discovery in the late 19 th century. The visualisation of the palette, which is preserved in three fragments dispersed over two museums (the British Museum and the musée du Louvre), has been a long and winding road with many poor and only a few high quality drawings and photos. This has had a strong impact on the a…
An Early Dynastic Crucible from the Settlement of Elkab (Upper Egypt)
During excavations in the spring of 2015 in the settlement of Elkab, a complete and almost intact crucible was discovered on the floor level of a Second Dynasty building. This article describes the crucible and its archaeological context, it explores the design of the crucible in comparison with contemporary crucibles of a corresponding style and it foreshadows the character of on-going research. The crucible has the shape depicted in Old Kingdom…

Naqada (Nagada)
Naqada or Nagada, known as Ombos in Classical Antiquity (25°54' N, 32°43' E, Upper Egypt, west bank of the Nile), is the eponymous site of the Predynastic Naqada culture.

The Badarian and Tasian are the earliest Neolithic cultures known in Upper Egypt.
Predynastic Period, Egypt
In the winter of 1895, W. M. F. Petrie discovered several sites in the Naqada region
Visual representation and state development in Egypt
In Predynastic representations, strongly stylised animals and plants with symbolic values occur. The astonishing craft smanship by which some objects were decorated shows that the artisans were capable of producing almost any kind of representation they would have desired. Therefore, if a representation is stylised, this should be intentional. One of the most important reasons for the stylisation will have been the fact that the artisans did not …
The earliest representations of royal power in Egypt
The vivid engravings on vertical rocks at the desert site of Nag el-Hamdulab west of the Nile comprise a rock art gallery of exceptional historical significance. The authors show that the images of boats with attendant prisoners, animals and the earliest representation of a pharaoh offer a window on Dynasty 0, and depict the moment that the religious procession of pre-Dynastic Egypt became the triumphant tour of a tax-collecting monarch
Naqada Iiia-B, A Crucial Phase in the Relative Chronology of the Naqada Culture
The Early Dynastic origin of the water-lily motif
The association of the water-lily with architecture and art is one of the most familiar visual aspects of the ancient Egyptian culture. However, the earliest representations of the water-lily date only to the Naqada III period. The finds of that period are discussed using the available archaeological and environmental data. An interdisciplinary approach allows the interpretation of the symbolic meaning of the plant within the cultural context of …

Two Protodynastic Objects in Brussels and the Origin of the Bilobate Cult-Sign of Neith
New publication and discussion of two fragmentary stone objects of Protodynastic date in the Musées Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire in Brussels, together with a further fragment from one of them, found a few years ago in the excavations of the DAIK at Umm el-Qa'ab. The carved decoration of both includes representations of the click beetle (Agrypnus notodonta Latr.), sacred to Neith. From their iconography, it is suggested that the bilobate cult-sign o…
