Ṉäku Dhäruk The Bark Petitions: How the People of Yirrkala Changed the Course of Australian Democracy
Racialised foreign policy and the prospects for Indigenous diplomacy
First Nations peoples of Australia have long engaged in international diplomatic efforts as part of their political struggles in pursuit of rights that are now embedded in international law. However, these efforts and the commendable advocacy of Indigenous diplomacy by Mary Graham and Morgan Brigg in their Australian National University lecture also face forces deriving from the racialised foundations of the Australian polity that run though the …

Action and anxiety: The long history of settler protest about the nature of Australian colonization
From the earliest years of settlement there were people who heard what one of them called the ‘whispering in their hearts’ or moral anxiety about the nature of Australian settlement. This often had a religious base and became related with the crusade against slavery. There were always people who made themselves unpopular by attacking the way Australian settlement unfolded and the violence on the frontier. They often appealed to opinion overseas a…
A History of Tasmania
This captivating work charts the history of Tasmania from the arrival of European maritime expeditions in the late eighteenth century, through to the modern day. By presenting the perspectives of both Indigenous Tasmanians and British settlers, author Henry Reynolds provides an original and engaging exploration of these first fraught encounters. Utilising key themes to bind his narrative, Reynolds explores how geography created a unique economic …
Aborigines and European social hierarchy
Until the 1840s the main emphasis of policy makers in the Australian colonies was on the incorporation of the Aborigines into colonial society. Confidence in this plan declined as the century progressed and some argued all along that the blacks belonged to a doomed race which could never be assimilated. Whereas assimilationists of the mid-twentieth century made no mention of class when they projected future Aboriginal adoption of the 'Australian …
Before the instant of contact’: Some evidence from nineteenth-century Queensland
How much did Aborigines normally know about Europeans before the arrival of the first permanent settlers? The amount and nature of that information was probably a vital influence on Aboriginal behaviour and, as a corollary, coloured European perception of indigenous society at the 'instant of contact'.1 But as with any question about the far side of the frontier this is difficult to answer conclusively. Existing evidence is scattered and inadequa…
Drawing the Global Colour Line: White Men's Countries and the International Challenge of Racial Equality
In 1900 W. E. B. DuBois prophesied that the colour line would be the key problem of the twentieth-century and he later identified one of its key dynamics: the new religion of whiteness that was sweeping the world. Whereas most historians have confined their studies of race-relations to a national framework, this book studies the transnational circulation of people and ideas, racial knowledge and technologies that under-pinned the construction of …

Genocide and Settler Society: Frontier Violence and Stolen Indigenous Children in Australian History
Fighting Words: Writing about Race
Sovereignty
The conventional story is straightforward enough. It was like this: the Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders became British subjects when the Crown progressively asserted sovereignty over the Australian continent in 1788, 1824, 1829 and 1879. However, the new Australian Commonwealth defined citizenship in such a way as to exclude indigenous Australians as well as non-European residents. This situation was remedied by a series of measures…

Analysis of Nominal Data
The updated second edition offers expanded discussions of the chi square test of significance and the potential measures of association available for use with categoric data. Reviewing basic techniques in analysis of nominal data, this paper employs survey research data on party identification and ideologies to indicate which measures and tests are most appropriate for particular theoretical concerns. This book serves as an ideal primer for Volum…

Jimmy Governor and Jimmie Blacksmith
Historian Henry Reynolds examines the historical background of and model for Keneally's novel and focuses on four things: "to outline the general background to race relations in rural Australia in the late nineteenth century, to examine the significance of Jimmy Governor's career, to note public reaction to it, and finally to consider the version of the events depicted in Keneally's novel" (14)

Some Comments on the Causal Analysis of Surveys with Log-Linear Models
Recent developments in analysis of cross-classified data have given social scientists powerful tools for investigating relationships among qualitative variables. Since investigators can analyze cross-classifications with concepts similar to those used in regression and path analysis, they may feel that the level of measurement problem has been solved. This study shows, however, that at least one approach, log-linear analysis, does not by itself s…

Nonparametric Partial Correlation and Causal Analysis
The properties of Quade's 'index of matched correlation'are explored in the context of causal analysis. Quade's approach is tested on data with specified characteristics generated through a computer simulation. Although nonparametric partial correlation must be used with caution, it supplies an easily interpreted and applied method for analyzing categorized data
