Social Validation as a Key Process to Participatory and Engaged Research
Participatory and engaged research is an approach in which the traditional boundaries between subject (the one who investigates) and object (the one being investigated) are intentionally blurredand both construct purpose and knowledge. In this type of inquiry, the researcher—alongside research participants—not only analyzes or interprets social reality but actively seeks to transform it. While this approach poses significant challenges, particula…
Affordance of conciliation
Purpose Hybrid organizations offer an innovative approach to promote social impact. However, hybrids face the challenge of reconciling the dual mission (social/financial). The purpose is to understand how hybrids and information and communication technologies (ICT) interact, unveiling opportunities ICT offers for hybrids regarding the dual mission. Design/methodology/approach We used affordance theory and adopted a predominantly inductive approac…
Working at the crossroads of alternative currencies and degrowth
In this review, we analyze the existing literature on the role of alternative currencies within degrowth . While degrowth emerged in the early 2000s alongside growing awareness of accelerating environmental crises and widening global inequalities, alternative currencies have a longer history. Alternative currencies have served as devices for communities seeking to become less dependent on the dominant economic system, but degrowth and technologic…
Dislocating peripheries to the center
Although social innovation has gained increasing importance in recent decades due to its promise of promoting social change, critical scholars have identified a number of gray areas, notably numerous perspectives that fail to deeply question the conditions that maintain social inequalities and exclusion, and that are marked by the absence of the voices of those living in the so-called “peripheries.” Through the example of The Agency, we propose a…

Improving public housing policies that target low-income households
Research on street-level bureaucrats has examined the various ways in which these professionals have implemented public policies in areas such as healthcare, education, and security, often emphasizing the role played by discretion in the implementation process. Despite its importance, the concept of street-level bureaucracy has scarcely been approached by housing studies. This study focuses on the role of street-level workers in the delivery of p…
Nourishing the Social Innovation Debate with the “Social Technology” South American Research Tradition
Inspired by the South American research tradition known as “social technology,” this article proposes an operational framework to advance the understanding of mechanisms that help to promote social transformation. To illustrate its theorizing potential, we apply the framework to a nonprofit organization– Parole d’excluEs –that was created in Montreal (Canada) in 2006 and that has been promoting citizen mobilization and commitment to social change…
When social movements collaborate with the state towards the right to the city
The right to the city represents a critique of the city as a place and an object of capitalist accumulation, in which priority is given to exchange value over use value. This critique references an ongoing and collective struggle for urban production to be radically democratic, as the expanded participation of city users would lead to appropriation, with social movements occupying a central role. This paper discusses the practices of urban social…
A dialectical reflection on the emergence of the ‘citizen as consumer’ as neoliberal citizenship
In this article, we argue that citizenship conceived within a context of neoliberal rationality helps explain the emergence of what we term the ‘citizen as consumer’. We define the citizen as consumer as someone who relates to the state and the public realms from the private perspective of consumption. We ask how this emergent neoliberal citizen is configured in peripheral countries that are regarded as exemplifying ‘weak’ citizenship. To respond…
Fostering the post-development debate
This essay revisits the historical development of a concept – tecnologia social – as one avenue for discussing alternatives to post-development, arguing that the Western-based historical path of technology development is one of the main sources of growing human impoverishment, social inequalities and economic dependency. The concept of tecnologia social points towards political processes that create opportunities to redefine the arrangements amon…
Jamming the jamming
Based on a reflexive and critical analysis of the citizen protests that pervaded Brazilian cities in June 2013, in this article we argue that a significant part of the demonstrators’ dissatisfaction took the form of a new politics of consumption with particular characteristics, including the subversion of the culture jamming concept by citizens and by corporations. Our main contribution is to provide the Brazilian protests as an illustration of a…
Dialogical Principles for Qualitative Inquiry
Leaving the thesis proposal defense room, the PhD business student had an important assignment to accomplish before being authorized to set a date for defending her thesis: to better justify the validity of her qualitative inquiry framed by a critical interpretive standpoint. Knowing that the generation, analysis, and interpretation of empirical materials are processes always conducted within some understanding of what constitutes legitimate inqu…
Rethinking E‐government Performance Assessment From a Citizen Perspective
The use of information and communication technology ( ICT ), particularly that related to the consolidation of the internet as a social and business networking medium, has impelled governments towards enabling e‐government (e‐gov) programs to transform the future of the delivery of public services. E‐gov has a clear economic, social, and political impact that should be monitored in order to steer the design of effective public policies. In this a…
