Open Access•Edward Scribner Ames, Edward Ames et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•1977•Cited by: 18•References: 9

Tax systems in England, France, Spain, and Venice are regarded as providing payments from subjects to governments for protection against foreign and domestic threats. In each developing state, the supply and demand for protection at the time of the tax system's origin determined the long-term character of taxation. Only where taxes arose in an environment of exceptionally long wars did subjects forfeit their right to control levies. Groups having…

  • The Sterling Crisis of 1337–1339

Open Access•Edward Scribner Ames, Edward Ames•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•1965•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The sterling crisis of 1337–1339 is interesting for two reasons. First, it seems to be the earliest such crisis for which detailed analysis is possible. Second, the details of this crisis, when compared to those pertaining to the 1340's, offer what might be called a “textbook example” of the differences between non-convertible and convertible foreign exchange systems

  • A View of Soviet Business—Through Window or Mirror

    Open Access•Edward Scribner Ames, Edward Ames•ARTICLE•World Politics•1961

In 1943 a young American naval officer on duty in Moscow was sent to Murmansk to tend to the paper work involved in unloading a Lend–Lease convoy. Afterwards, a party was given by his Soviet counterparts, and by dawn, when it broke up, he was deep in an exchange of “basic fundamentals” with a congenial Red Navy lieutenant. Emerging into the street, they met a long line of men carrying supplies from the docks. The Soviet officer looked, and said w…

  • Economic Policy in Eastern Europe From 1950 Through 1956

Open Access•Edward Scribner Ames, Edward Ames•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•1958

Growth in East European industrial output, employment, and la bor productivity, while rapid, slowed down markedly after 1950, as did agricul tural collectivization. These are all explainable by inflationary pressures. At first, governments reacted to inflation only by drastic operations like currency conversions, but in 1952, Stalin's Economic Problems presented a more basic price analysis. His successors rejected it in favor of farm price revisi…

Edward Scribner Ames•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1941

Morale and religion are defined. The negative of religion is cynicism, which develops no morale. Religious customs and rites of early society reveal the sense of importance of their scrupulous observance. The very life and welfare are felt to depend upon such observance. The same feeling persists in more developed religions, and in the aggressive world religions morale rises with success in expansion. The various groups within these missionary re…
