Product quality, the scope of export destinations and skill demand for sustainable development: An investigation for China
This paper incorporates the scope of export destinations into firms’ skill selection framework, enabling a comprehensive discussion on exporting firms' product quality and skill upgrading mechanisms in China. Our theoretical analysis finds an inverted U-shaped relationship between export destination scope and product quality improvement, implying a substitution effect between export destination scope and skill demand when product quality is below…

Impact of Excess Body Mass on Employment Prospects in Australia
This paper investigates whether overweight and/or obese individuals experience diminished employment prospects in the labour market in Australia. Exploiting the 2006 to 2019 panel dynamics of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia survey data, we implement empirical strategies that account for the historical role of previous-period employment and previous-period body mass on current employment. We uncover less than compelling evid…
The impact of digital literacy in enhancing individuals’ health in China
Several policy suggestions emanate from the findings. To enhance the positive impact of digital literacy on individuals' health, the policy makers should emphasize on enhancing digital literacy particularly in rural areas and older age groups, bridging the digital divide, refining employment services and embracing a healthy concept of online social networking
Unconditional cash transfer programs and women’s empowerment: Evidence from Pakistan
This study explores the impact of unconditional cash transfers on the multiple dimensions of women’s empowerment in Pakistan. Emphasizing the importance of cultural and religious norms, empowerment is considered as a latent construct manifested through three distinct choice dimensions, viz., “self,” “familial,” and “economic.” For the empirical estimation, a structural equation model is used on the country-representative Impact Evaluation Survey …
An investigation of body mass distributional changes in Australia, 1995–2017/18
This study investigates changes in the distribution of body mass for adult Australians between 1995 and 2017/18. Using three nationally representative health surveys, we first apply the parametric generalised entropy (GE) class of inequality indices to measure the level of disparity in the body mass distribution. Results from the GE measure reveal that, while growth of body mass inequality is a population-wide experience, demographic and socio-ec…

John Rawls in Light of the Archive: Introduction to the Symposium on the Rawls Papers
This symposium calls attention to the archival papers of the political philosopher John Rawls. As the symposium papers show, the archive illuminates the development of Rawls's philosophical and political visions, showing the varied intellectual traditions on which he drew. The papers portray Rawls as a naturalist who believed that moral and political arguments should be made in light of facts about natural human capacities and propensities. The p…

Functioning Achievements in Urban Bangladesh: A Comparison with Rural Areas
In view of the differences in the nature and concept of poverty across rural and urban regions, this article argues that a nationwide standardised poverty reduction strategy package may not be equally effective in these two regions. This article examines the limitations of existing poverty assessment approaches used in Bangladesh and identifies various indicators that are responsible for the achievement of higher level functioning in urban region…
Income Inequality in Singapore
The World Bank, 1993 conferred on Singapore the status of ‘tiger economy’ because of its two miraculous characteristics: high growth and reduced income inequality. Expansion of educational provision is one of the major policies the Government of Singapore followed since 1975 particularly to enrich the human capital endowment of the country which has been crucial to the success of Singapore. This book made a coherent study of these extremely impor…
Women as marginal workers in informal mining and quarrying, India: A preliminary analysis
This paper presents an analysis of 2001 Indian Census data at the state level on women workers in the mining and quarrying (M&Q) sector. In the absence of official data on informal M&Q, the paper uses the census category of ‘marginal workers’ as a rough indicator of informal employment within this industrial category. The paper has two stages of analysis: first, it presents a state-by-state description of employment of women as main and marginal …
Multidimensional poverty approach and development of poverty indicators: The case of Bangladesh
The multidimensionality of poverty is often neglected at the policy-formulation stage in developing countries. As need priorities of local poor vary across countries and within regions of the same country, an understanding of finely tuned poverty indicators should be the starting point in formulating country-specific poverty-reduction strategies. By reviewing cross-country studies and existing poverty literature, this paper demonstrates the const…

Economic Growth and Income Inequality in China, India and Singapore: Trends and Policy Implications
The world at large is watching both China and India as powerhouses of economic growth. The two nations have achieved significantly high rates of economic growth ever since their respective economies liberalized in 1978 and 1991. Singapore, despite its limited land size and almost total dependence on external trade, has performed remarkably well and has moved ‘from the third world to the first’. This book documents and explains the rapid economic …
Trends in income inequality in China: The effects of various sources of income
Using data from the China Statistical Yearbook, trends in income inequality for urban and rural China are studied. According to our estimates, the overall Gini for China increased from 1980/81 to 2008. The rural Gini increased at an exponential rate of 1.2% while the urban Gini rose at a rate of 2.7%. To overcome weaknesses in the existing Gini decomposition methodology, we use the method developed by Podder and Mukhopadhaya (2002. The Changing P…

This paper examines the operation of the project in the state of West Bengal using original survey data collected in 2008. The survey reveals a number of promising findings, including high rates of provision of both midday meals and f…

Earnings Inequality in Singapore
Based on the data on earnings distributions from the national labour force surveys of 1974-98, trends in income inequality are studied. Of particular note are the findings from the Paglin Gini and Theil decompositions. The former show that behind an invariant overall Gini ratio lies a declining inter-age disparity and growing P-Gini. From the latter, it is found that inter-age and inter-educational disparities have respectively contributed some 1…
