  • Yardstick competition in Italian waste legislation targets

Open Access•M Agovino, Katia Marchesano et al.•ARTICLE•Papers of the Regional Science…•2024•References: 10

Italian environmental laws set targets for separate waste collection (SWC) in a top-down public decision-making approach. This study uses quarterly data (2002Q1–2019Q1) on the 103 Italian provinces to investigate whether the targets activate a yardstick competition (YC) mechanism in SWC. Applying a two-regime spatial Durbin model, this study demonstrates that YC emerges in the sub-periods defined by target levels (35%, 45% and 65%) when using an …

  • Environmental legislation and achieving circular economy in Italy's waste sector

    Open Access•M Agovino, Massimiliano Cerciello et al.•ARTICLE•Utilities Policy•2024•References: 2

In the European Union, the transition to a circular economy has been guided by supranational regulations, subsequently transposed by Member States. In Italy, transposition occurred through Legislative Decrees 22/1997 and 152/2006, which set ambitious waste targets. To test their effectiveness in promoting the transition, we implement a Shift-and-Share analysis on data over 1997–2006 and 2007–2019. The three Italian macro-areas (North, Centre and …

  • Does context matter? Exploring the effects of productive structures on the relationship between innovation and workforce skills’ complementarity

    Open Access•Rosalia Castellano, Gaetano Musella et al.•ARTICLE•Quality & Quantity•2023

Innovation is often seen as a crucial factor for regional economic growth. Many strands of literature have investigated the role of agglomeration externalities or workers’ skills in the innovation capacity of the territory without ever considering their interaction. Using fixed-effects Poisson regression models on official data for 2014–2019 in the Italian regions, this paper aims twofold. First, by controlling for region-specific variables, the …

  • Economic losses in tourism during the Covid-19 pandemic. The case of Sorrento

    M Agovino, Gaetano Musella•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2022

The tourism sector is facing its most severe crisis under the COVID-19 pandemic. Social distancing measures, global travel restrictions, stay-at-home orders, and other lockdown measures brought tourism to a halt in 2020. We estimate the potential economic losses thereof in terms of added value and number of tourists by nationality. By using the city of Sorrento as prominent and representative case study, we implement time-series analysis with aut…

  • Wage dynamics in light of the structural changes in the labour market across four more economically developed countries of Europe

Rosalia Castellano, Gaetano Musella et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Social Economy•2021•References: 70

This paper investigates the evolution of wages and wage inequality in four European countries during the economic crisis in light of important shifts in the occupational structure. Through recentered influence function regression for quantiles of European Union Survey on Income and Living Conditions data, this analysis links research on the primary forces of both wage and wage inequality to the decomposition of their changes between 2005 and 2013…
