Military Spending and the Falling Rate of Profit in the United States
The relationship between militarism, military spending, and the development of capitalism has been widely debated among Marxist scholars, with no clear consensus. This article contributes to this discussion by examining how military expenditure relates to profit and output in the world’s largest military spender, the United States. Focusing on a single-country case study enables a more detailed analysis than recent cross-national research. After …
Military Keynesianism and East Asia
Expectations have been high that East Asia would provide the growth engine for the global economy in the twenty first century. At the same time, it has become increasingly clear that these economies face headwinds, not least in north-east Asia from accelerated demographic aging, leading to fears that these economies, too, face the prospect of secular stagnation, and that Japan’s ‘lost decades’ could spread much further afield. With geopolitical t…

Height self-selection of internal migrants in Italy in the second half of the twentieth century
This paper examines internal migrant selection in Italy using individual height data from the 1951 and 1980 birth cohorts of military conscripts. Information on both place of birth and residence of conscripts allows us to compare migrants' heights to the height distributions of their non-migrant peers at the national level and to their populations of origin. Results suggest that migrants from southern Italy were negatively selected at the nationa…
The price of war
With the growth in conflict around the world, the measurement of the likely economic cost of conflict is an important task in making the case for peacekeeping, peacemaking and post conflict reconstruction to prevent recurrence. Conflict is also a development issue, as most of the conflicts affect the poorest countries and are often civil wars. This paper deals with a number of issues that arise in the literature and presents a comprehensive analy…
The effect of obtaining EU citizenship in former transition economies on remittance flows
We estimate the effect of the granting of European Union (EU) citizenship rights on the flow of remittances from Italy. We use the EU enlargements of 2007 and 2013 as natural experiments. The results show a negative impact on remittance flows. The effect of the 2007 EU enlargement shows how Romanian and Bulgarian citizens reduced the average annual amount of remittances by 1400 Euros per year per migrant. In the case of the 2013 EU enlargement, w…

Fathers Matter
The lockdown imposed during the spring of 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic upset families lives, in addition to the health consequences of the virus, forcing parents to completely reorganize their labor, domestic work and childcare time. At the same time, school closures forced children to rearrange their lives and learning processes: in Italy, schools and nurseries were closed for four months, and the incidence and quality of distance l…
Smoking habits in HIV-infected people compared with the general population in Italy
HIV-infected patients showed a higher rate of current smokers, a larger number of cigarettes smoked and a lower quitting rate than the general population. Our findings emphasize the need for smoking cessation strategies targeting HIV persons
Is it Time to Quit? Smoking Persistence and Self-Rated Health
This study evaluates the impact of smoking on self-rated health using a British cohort born in 1970 that was followed through adult life. Records were taken for this dataset many times; individual self-rated health was first recorded in 1996 at age 26, and afterward at ages 30, 34, and 42. The smoking rate over time determined membership in the groups of current-smokers, never-smokers, and former-smokers. Estimates showed that the current-smokers…

The Economic Impact of Smoke‐Free Policies on Restaurants, Cafés, and Bars
In this paper, we investigate the extent to which the economic outcomes of restaurants, bars, and cafés have been affected by the introduction of anti-smoking regulations in Europe. We use an unexploited panel database to collect a comprehensive set of information on financial indicators regarding the balance sheets of private and public companies in various economic sectors. The results show that smoke-free policies did not significantly affect …
The effects of military and non-military government expenditures on private consumption
In this article, we provide evidence that civilian and military government spending have specific characteristics that can affect private consumption differently. Our vector autoregressive (VAR) estimates for the US economy for the period 1960–2013 show that civilian expenditure induces a positive and significant response on private consumption, whereas military spending has a negative impact. We also analyze the effects of these public spending …

Estimating the Smoking Ban Effects on Smoking Prevalence, Quitting and Cigarette Consumption in a Population Study of Apprentices in Italy
It is estimated that the Italian smoking ban generally had no effect on smoking prevalence, quitting ratio, or cigarette consumption of apprentices. However, when the estimates were applied to subpopulations, significant effects were found: -1% in smoking prevalence, +2% in quitting, and -3% in smoking intensity of apprentices with at least a diploma
The effect of smoking habit changes on body weight
Does Cigarette Smoking Affect Body Weight? Causal Estimates from the Clean Indoor Air Law Discontinuity
This paper examines the causal effect of smoking on body weight in Italy. We take advantage of the discontinuity in smoking habits introduced by the Italian smoking ban in 2005. Our estimates indicate that the ban reduced smoking intensity by half a cigarette per day and smoking participation rate by 2 percentage points. We estimate a significant effect on body weight of about 1 kg. Heterogeneous effects are also found, highlighting a smaller imp…
Differences in Birthweight Outcomes
We find that the birthweight of second-borns is significantly higher than that of first-borns. Statistically significant effects are related with a longer gestational age, an increased number of visits during the pregnancy, and the gender of infants. On the other hand, we do not observe any significant effect related with mother’s age and with other characteristics of interest
