  • Competency-Based Training for Young Men with Suicide Risk: A Randomized Waitlist-Controlled Trial

Open Access•Yik Wa Law, Man Tsun Wong et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Social Work Practice•2026

Purpose: Traditional masculine norms of self-reliance and emotional restraint deter help-seeking, contributing to higher suicide rates in men. Young men online adhering to these norms face elevated risk, worsened by negative digital experiences. Interventions emphasizing masculine-valued physical competency may aid suicide prevention. Methods: A two-arm, four-wave randomized waitlist-controlled trial recruited men aged 17–30 at suicide risk from …

Open Access•Rita Hui Ting Lok, Yik Wa Law•ARTICLE•SSM - Qualitative Research in…•2025

Mental health service underutilisation amongst men is common in the developed world, and Hong Kong is no exception. Some have attributed the phenomenon to conformity to traditional masculinity. Global and local feminist movements and social processes/reforms leading to female advancement across arenas, however, are forcing men to rethink and adapt to new gender roles by “doing”, “re-doing” and “undoing” gender. In the current study, masculinity i…

  • Public Housing and Household Savings—A Three-Decade Repeated Cross-Sectional Analysis

Open Access•Ying Zhang, Yi Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Housing affordability is a major determinant of quality of life. Despite the relatively high GDP per capita in Hong Kong (HK) (USD 460,000), about one-third of the population lives in public rental housing (PRH) because they cannot afford private housing. Existing research estimating the benefits of PRH or direct housing supports faces methodological limitations. Addressing this research gap, our study adopts an "in-kind subsidy" approach to esti…

  • What has become a burden in rental housing? Workplace location, neighbourhood and housing environment on household rental burden”

    Open Access•Man Tsun Wong, Yik Wa Law•ARTICLE•Habitat International•2025•References: 90

The escalating severity of housing affordability issues has compelled households to make compromises across various life domains in order to maintain a manageable rental burden. However, the dynamics between household factors and rental burden have not been thoroughly explored, and it remains unclear which factors most significantly affect rental burden, particularly among those experiencing disproportionately high burdens. This study employs a m…

  • The Impacts of Intimate Partner Violence on Postpartum Depression: An Updated Meta-Analysis

Open Access•Xinyi Wei, Weiwei Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Trauma Violence & Abuse•2024

The associations between intimate partner violence (IPV) and postpartum depression (PPD) have been well established in previous reviews. However, none has explored potential differences between IPV subtypes or exposure times, which could help healthcare providers recognize the adverse impacts of various IPV subtypes and conduct comprehensive IPV screening. This study aimed to estimate the impacts of overall IPV and its subtypes (physical, psychol…

Yik Wa Law, Melissa Chan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•2019

Divorce has increased dramatically in Hong Kong and elsewhere in Asia since the 2000s, whereas the West has seen a decline, suggesting there are factors specific to Hong Kong relating to divorce. Open Access•Feng Sha, Qian Chang et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

The biased MOH-VR System underestimated China's national and rural suicide rates. • Roads less taken: Pathways to care before near-lethal suicide attempts

    Open Access•Yik Wa Law•ARTICLE•International Social Work•2018•References: 5

This study identifies the cultural values affecting near-lethal suicide attempters’ help-seeking behaviours. Six Chinese survivors of intentional near-lethal self-poisoning were interviewed and their medical records examined. Interviewees with strong suicidal intentions had less demand for healthcare services and were resistant to care. Non-contact with services was associated with perceived service irrelevance, unhelpfulness and personal need to…

This qualitative study investigated how adolescents utilize meaning-focused coping during suc…

Yik Wa Law, Pearly Wong et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work•2014•References: 3

Although mental illness is a major suicide risk factor, some cases of suicide list no symptoms of mental disorder at the time of death. Studying suicides without psychiatric illness has important implications for social work because this group's service needs seem to have been overlooked. The authors of this article conducted a psychological autopsy study of 150 people who committed suicide and 150 age- and gender-matched living controls. Suicide…

  • Suicide with psychiatric diagnosis and without utilization of psychiatric service

Open Access•Yik Wa Law, Yik-wa Law et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

The non-contact group was clearly different from the contact group and actually comprised a larger proportion of the suicide population that they could hardly be reached by usual individual-based suicide prevention efforts. For this reason, both universal and strategic suicide prevention measures need to be developed specifically in non-medical settings to reach out to this non-contact group in order to achieve better suicide prevention results
