Combining policymaking tools for green transition
The present study combines eco-efficiency performance measurement for the green energy transition with club convergence. This is achieved by applying hybrid window data envelopment analysis (hybrid WDEA) and club convergence analysis. The decision-making units (DMUs) are the 45 emissions-intensive trade-exposed (EITE) economies categorized into three geopolitical entities (OECD, European Union (EU), and BRICS) during 1995–2022. The energy mix of …
The Influence of Eco-Anxiety on Sustainable Consumption Choices
Background: This review explores the influence of eco-anxiety on sustainable consumption, with a specific focus on the urban context. While the literature on green consumerism continues to expand, the role of emotional and psychological factors, especially eco-anxiety, in shaping sustainable consumption decisions remains underexplored. Most existing studies emphasize cognitive, social, or contextual drivers, often overlooking affective dimensions…
Psychological Resilience to Climate Change
The current study presents a causal model of climate‐induced psychological resilience by assessing the impact of dispositional mindfulness, self‐efficacy beliefs, and perceived restorativeness of nature. It further examines the associations among climate change coping strategies, subjective well‐being components, eco‐emotions, and resilience. Structured questionnaires were administered to 552 participants selected through stratified sampling in a…
The Socio‐Cultural and Spiritual Dimensions on Non‐Marketed Environmental Valuation
The present review aims to strengthen both the theoretical foundation and real‐world relevance of environmental valuation methods, especially in regions marked by cultural diversity or spiritual significance. Its goal is to explore how embracing socio‐cultural pluralism can support more inclusive, meaningful, and accepted environmental decisions, encouraging deeper public engagement, emotional connection, and long‐term care for nature. The novelt…
Global perspectives on club convergence
Human insecurity is omnipresent due to the negative effects of globalization and multi‐crisis. A global analysis based on club convergence was conducted for 162 countries and covers the period 2007–2021. The studied indicators are (i) sustainable development goals index (SDGI), (ii) human development index (HDI), and (iii) corruption perception index (CPI). The method used, which is based on the log t‐regression test, identifies both groups of co…

Non-farm employment, natural resource extraction, and poverty
Natural resources are important in sustaining the livelihoods of rural households and the environment. However, over-exploitation is causing an alarming depletion of natural resources in many developing countries. At the same time, rapid economic growth has created non-farm employment opportunities for local people. In this context, examining the interrelationship between non-farm employment and natural resource extraction provides useful informa…
Using environmental indicators in performance evaluation of sustainable development health goals
Environmental economics in Classical Athens
In this paper, we present a series of environmental policies that were implemented by the city-state of Athens during the Classical period (508–323 BCE) through a specific set of environmental institutions. They included: waste management, the implementation of a recycling process regarding animal manure as well as hygiene practices. Special administrative bodies were set up for this purpose with the power to impose heavy fines to offenders, and …
Influence of growth and urbanization on CO 2 emissions
This study analyses the relationship between foreign direct investment, economic growth, urbanization, energy use, and carbon emissions in Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS countries) between 1990 and 2014. According to the empirical results, both environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) and pollution haven hypotheses (PHH) are confirmed. Urbanization contributes to reducing carbon emissions, while energy use is one of the main drivi…

The Gender Environmentalism Gap in Germany and the Netherlands
Objective The present study attempts to shed some light on the environmental attitudes gap between the two genders in Germany and the Netherlands. Methods The article employs three alternative indicators of environmental attitudes, namely, “environmental values,” “environmental support,” and “environmental concern.” By using decomposition models, the underlying factors and their relative contribution in the observed gender gap in environmentalism…
Environmental behavior in a private-sphere context
Evaluating 22 EU member states’ ‘waste culture’ using Hofstede’s and Schwartz’s cultural dimensions
The issue of municipal solid waste (MSW) arisings has received great attention recently since it is not only a by-product of economic activity but also serves as an input to the economy through material or energy recovery. The main focus of this study is cultural formation and especially the current picture of waste culture and public perception across European Union (EU) member states. Thus, this study will first evaluate environmental efficienc…
How do motives and knowledge relate to intention to perform environmental behavior? Assessing the mediating role of constraints
Stakeholder engagement for sustainable development and their suggestions for environmental policy
This study primarily attempts to understand people's beliefs toward marine protected areas considering as a case study the National Marine Park of Alonissos, Northern Sporades in Greece in order to achieve its sustainability. Specifically, it aims to identify people's opinion about the utility of the park investigating also their beliefs in relation to socioeconomic characteristics. For this reason, a face‐to‐face survey of 200 randomly selected …

A Multi-dimensional Measure of Environmental Behavior
Gathering society's opinion of the sustainable management and economic value of the coastal zone
This study explores people's perceptions of marine ecosystem services and sustainable coastal zone management. More specifically, it investigates the relationship between respondents' attitudes and motives for placing economic value on the coastal zone, expressing their intention to pay for coastal zone quality improvement. Primary data were obtained from a sample of 468 people living on the coastline of the Pagasitikos Gulf. Respondents' attitud…
Assessing Waste Generation Efficiency in EU Regions towards Sustainable Environmental Policies
This paper employs data envelopment analysis (DEA) to consider waste generation at a regional level in the European Union (EU). By doing so both good and bad outputs are taken into account and different frameworks are designed. Five parameters (waste generation, employment rate, capital formation, GDP and population density) are used for 172 EU regions and for the years 2009, 2011 and 2013. In this way four frameworks have been designed, each wit…
Measuring Sustainability Efficiency Using a Two‐Stage Data Envelopment Analysis Approach
In this article, we apply an additive two‐stage data envelopment analysis estimator on a panel of 20 countries with advanced economies for the time period 1990–2011 in order to create a composite sustainability efficiency index. We use a window‐based approach in order to study the countries over the years. The sustainability efficiency index is decomposed into production efficiency and eco‐efficiency indicators. The results reveal inequalities am…
Agriculture and the threat to biodiversity in sub-saharan africa
The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment identified habitat loss due to the extensive growth of agriculture as the primary driver of biodiversity loss. One implication of this is that agricultural intensification has the potential to reduce threats to wild species. In this paper we consider the evidence for differences in the threat to biodiversity posed by the intensive and extensive growth of agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa. Using data on numbers …

Socio-economic integration of ethnic Greeks from the former USSR
The purpose of this study is to collect data on the demographic and socio-cultural characteristics of ethnic Greeks from the former USSR and then assess the extent to which these characteristics affect their integration into the Greek labour market. To achieve this target we employ logistic regression analysis to test a model to predict the case of being employed or not by considering various factors as explanatory variables. A field survey carri…
