Towards an asset-based approach in knowledge production? A systematic review and synthesis of refugee education literature
There are increasing calls to take a more asset-based, decolonised approach to refugee education. However, we lack analysis of the degree to which the field of refugee education knowledge production is deficit-based or asset-based and the factors that structure those patterns. We address this gap through a systematic review and mixed-methods meta-synthesis of peer-reviewed articles on refugee education since the 1970s. We find more asset-based te…
A Review of Science and Conservation Management for the Cumberland Sound Beluga Population
For many centuries, belugas, or white whales (Delphinapterus leucas), have been a major source of subsistence and cultural identity for the Inuit living along the shores of Cumberland Sound, southeastern Baffin Island. During the late 1800s and first half of the twentieth century, the whales were also heavily exploited commercially for their oil and skins. By the late 1960s and early 1970s it had become clear that the beluga population was greatl…
The Prospects for Socialist Politics in South Africa: Global and Domestic Trends Following the Failed SRWP Experiment
Our article endeavours to critically examine the prospects for socialist parties and socialist policy reform in South Africa. Firstly, we seek to provide an appraisal of modern socialist politics and policies globally. Secondly, we attempt to diagnose why South Africa has been as yet unable to fashion a suitable socialist workers’ party during the democratic epoch. In this, the article discusses the prospects of socialist parties and policy refor…
Personality, attitude, and demographic correlates of academic dishonesty: A meta-analysis
Over a century of research has focused on the relationship between student characteristics and academic dishonesty. Here we conduct a meta-analysis of this extensive literature across three broad domains: personality, academic attitudes, and historical information including demographic and prior accomplishments. After analyzing correlations from over 27,000 participants across 75 samples, several relationships stand out. Although measures of cons…
Platonic Conversations
A surprising fact—but one widely known among those who specialize in ancient philosophy—is that the interest and sophistication of ancient philosophical texts reliably increases in proportion to our ability to approach them with worthwhile questions and to notice details that others have overlooked. In this collection of fifteen essays, all previously published or forthcoming elsewhere, M. M. McCabe concentrates on the conversational aspect of cl…

Cross sector contributions to river pollution in England and Wales: Updating waterbody scale information to support policy delivery for the Water Framework Directive

Historical (1850–2000) gridded anthropogenic and biomass burning emissions of reactive gases and aerosols: Methodology and application
We present and discuss a new dataset of gridded emissions covering the historical period (1850–2000) in decadal increments at a horizontal resolution of 0.5° in latitude and longitude. The primary purpose of this inventory is to provide consistent gridded emissions of reactive gases and aerosols for use in chemistry model simulations needed by climate models for the Climate Model Intercomparison Program #5 (CMIP5) in support of the Intergovernmen…
Human mummified brain from a medieval tomb with lime-soil mixture barrier of the Joseon Dynasty, Korea
Although all of the Korean medieval mummies found up to the present time have shown relatively well-preserved brains, relevant biomedical information has been difficult to acquire owing to the obstacles to obtaining permission to conduct invasive investigations. However, recently we were able to secure permission to investigate, through various forms of examination including dissection, a well-preserved brain found in a lime-soil mixture barrier …
Molecular genetic variation in the East Midlands, England: Analysis of VNTR, STR and Alu insertion/deletion polymorphisms
The allele frequency spectrum and inter-population comparisons show that there is significant genetic variation in the five contiguous regional populations of the East Midlands. Some of this variation may be due to local geographical barriers, genetic drift and possibly the settlement patterns of Continental European invaders
Drug use, travel and HIV risk
Drug use, travel and HIV risk
A study was conducted to examine the travel experiences of a community sample of 160 drug users and 44 non-users recruited as part of a study of HIV risk. Of the sample, 47% (96/204) reported intercity travel in the previous ten years. Results showed that men were more likely to travel than women, Anglos more than minorities, and young persons more than old. When travellers testing HIV-seropositive (n = 13) were compared with seronegative travell…
